Google will require new apps on the Play Store to use App Bundles instead of APKs

01 July 2021
App Bundles are currently supported only by the Play Store and not, say, the Amazon App Store, which is coming to Windows 11.

OH NO, NOT A CHANCE! I'm definitely not going to embrace Split APK. It's a total faff to install the Split APK app directly from the internal or external storage onto the phone offline.

Some of the comments show that most have no idea of that they are talking about. Bundles have been used for a good while, alternative stores have their own bundle types, apkmirror for example, and many others. This is simply Google again, arriving late to its own party, and setting up a standard to bundles rather than having each alternative store pushing their own format.

I believe apkpure can also install apk bundle just fine. So playstore is not the only app store that can do that.

Anonymous, 01 Jul 2021the end of apks, so long modded netflix you will be missed.... moreDude, did you even read the article? Old apps can continue to provide apk instead of apks in playstore. All the popular apps which switched to apks format continue to publish their apps in apk format in other app stores or 3rd party websites. Even if they switch to apks bundle only, there are plenty of apps like split apk installer which can install them just fine without any root permission.

For play store if it means smaller and faster updates this is beneficial, can't see what is wrong. It is also open source so no, android is still miles ahead of iOS.

                      Please read all...

Partial installs of sideloaded apps—that is, apps that are not installed using the Google Play Store and are missing one or more required split APKs—fail on all Google-certified devices and devices running Android 10 (API level 29) or higher. When downloading your app through the Google Play Store, Google ensures that all required components of the app are installed.

Basically what this means, is Google is applying a locking down to the Android system. Being restricted and being dictated to what you install on your Android device and includes outside of Google Play.I believe in freedom to install what ever you want to your device. Maybe it's time for a new rival to the Android OS. This is a move to become closer to the Apple restricted OS. Long live freedom and expression...

It's open source so other stores can adopt the format, that's cool but the timing of this mandate for new apps to use the format exclusively seems rather suspect. Just as Microsoft announced that users will be able to run Android apps on the upcoming Windows 11, especially since it was optional since 2018. So why take away the choice now of all times? That's shady.
