The behavior seen on the OnePlus 9 Pro was on purpose.

Apple iPhone 6 was an old phone. About none changed their battery. Isn't it a miracle they can still be on par with current( 3 years ago) gen devices and work.
Also, Huawei done the same. Samsung doesn't need an argument, because it's CRAPYNOS.

whats the problem? Usually while i use any phone i turn on low power mode which slows down the CPU. it's not even noticeable in normal use. maybe in games, but i dont game on a phone

Let's wait for Qualcomm's own phone in collaboration with Asus, using SD 888. That should answer some questions..

HaterzSuckkkkk, 09 Jul 2021 apple deliberately slowed down the phone to PRESERVE BATTE... moreTo some extent, EVERYONE does it. Like, EVERYONE. Intel. AMD, Qualcomm, Apple, Mediatek, even Samsung.

it's called thermal throttling (for heat management), and in Apple's case, it's because they know that 1) Their software is so well integrated with their hardware that they can make tweaks and 2) Their Bionic series chips are always ahead of the Android market so they can afford to slow them down a little.

Samath N8 808 owner, 09 Jul 2021Totally agreed. A gut feeling tells me that Qualcomm made ... moreIt's not a dichotomy. The switch to the smaller 5nm node is not the cause of poor battery life in phones. It's the other things that had to change as well - the architecture, the power delivery, the software optimisations for temperature control and division of tasks among the cores. With a jump to the next gen, Qualcomm hasn't had much time to deal with these things, and THAT's why you're seeing such poor results.

TLDR; the 5nm technology itself isn't the problem. It's the lack of optimisations supporting the chip that causes it.

SouravDas, 11 Jul 2021What's the problem with it if it improves the battery ... moreI find it rather disrespectful that you boil down the entire scenario to just "the media wanting money". True enough, lots of media in the real world make money from controversies - but in this case, I think AnandTech is very much justified in their actions. In a sense, they are revealing the truth to consumers and help protect them from unethical practices. That should not be overlooked.

SouravDas, 11 Jul 2021What's the problem with it if it improves the battery ... moreI disagree. Your argument makes sense, that the full power of the Cortex X-1 shouldn't be used in simple tasks, draining unnecessary battery and causing unnecessary heat. BUT:

                  1) We paid full price for the Snapdragon 888 spec, and we expect to be able to use the full power of it. Imagine buying an expensive sports car and being told you can't use the full engine power for "fuel saving reasons" - it defeats the purpose of paying for the car/phone entirely.

                  2) The entire reason BIG.Little tech exists is so that efficiency cores are used for simple day to day tasks, while the A77 cores and X1 core are used during gaming and in heavier tasks. It's creators knew that most people had a similar mindset to yours, and the Snapdragon 888 uses the configuration. There should be no excuse to hide away performance without telling their users.

What's the problem with it if it improves the battery life? I don't want to involve a high performance core to browse in chrome if a lower performing core can give the same performance. It the games are affected, that would be a concern. But other that that it is not a problem at all. Anand tech is just bs. Even if OnePlus now unlock full power for even a mundane task, everyone will say they're cheating. It's hard to satisfy people these days especially the tech sites which make money creating controversies.

Anonymous, 09 Jul 2021This is the best video to explain how it doesn't matte... moreThat guy is bending the truth, no one said oneplus throttle during rendering or other Un popular apps. Anandtech test was about popular apps. As you can see graph I showed you before Vivaldi didn't throttle but Chrome did.

So he ignored those popular apps and test other things to answer Anandtech test? Don't you see he is biased?

Muthu, 08 Jul 2021Well, Qualcomm is at fault as well definitely. But, it is O... moreTotally agreed.
A gut feeling tells me that Qualcomm made this chipset to ensure that cooling systems become mainstream, but it wasn't too honest with the public about this, at least in the media. But why, is still the question..
Apparently, a lower nanometers construction was also supposed to help with battery life, but the opposite happened...

test user, 08 Jul 2021then why implement it on the oneplus nord with sd765g?I did not yet see a media report which mentions that Oneplus Nord also throttles apps. Could you link me?
If this is actually true, then I will also agree that its Oneplus' fault, although then a quick question comes to my curious mind- Why would Oneplus sabotage itself like this? What benefit do they have?
To best of my knowledge, SD765G has no big thermal issues.

Hemedans, 08 Jul 2021Then use Cortex A55? Why put sd 888 in 1st place then, why ... moreThey're not using SD870 for marketing reasons, as customers who want the best will get the best (according to their limited thinking).

Like I said, Oneplus' only fault is in not having a performance mode to use the big core, that I definitely blame them for. So, I agree with you completely.
But, my bigger blame is on Qualcomm. Every other company is struggling to get battery life and usable performance out of this so called 888.
