The ergonomic (small in android terms) size was 1 of the biggest pro's of the pixel phones.
They decided to go big (cheap).
This bad decision will explode in their face.

Which is something, but not quite 5 years full on. I'm excited for this one, but holding on to see more details about it.

What's with Google and the number 6⃣? They like making large phones for that number.
Nexus 6 (codename Shamu)
Nexus 6P
Pixel 6 / 6 Pro
So Apple did us a favor by creating the 12 and 13 minis. And no, my hands are not little kid or girls hands. I have long fingers. I just want smaller phones again circa 2004-2013.

What's really important is the effective diameter = focal length / f-number. If the effective diameter isn't large enough, smaller pixels won't increase the angular resolution due to diffraction. I wouldn't be surprised if Google chooses a very low effective diameter as Google often tries to reduce costs when it comes to camera hardware. Currently, the S21 Ultra and Huawei P40 Pro Plus are the periscope cameras with the largest effective diameters ( 6.25mm and 6.4mm). The periscope camera of the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra 5G only has 3.4mm.

Knowing phone history....
Best era for phone design? Anywhere from 2003-2016.
But the best era for mature mobile OSes is 2017 and up. Think of a Galaxy S8 aging much better than an S7 edge.
The last few years even though we lost headphone jack and are stuck with giant glass slabs, the SoC and OSes were perfectly meshed together. Phones from 2017 and up can last a good 8 years if you really pushed it.
I'm using an SE1 and it's over 5 years old and is still holding up well that it's 2 GB if RAM can keep me using it for another 2 years. Now imagine how long I could use my 12 mini? Easily until 2028. Phones have been perfected already. You're wasting money every 1 or 2 years on tiny improvements.

1. Google Pixel 3
2. Apple iPhone 12 mini
3. Essential Phone
4. Apple iPhone SE
My plan is to use my 12 mini and SE1 together for the next 3 years. Then go back using the Pixel 3 and Essential PH-1 for another year after that. So all 4 will have 3 year usage. My Pixel 3 and PH-1 were used together for 2 years already.
By 2025 or when Android 16 and Pixel 10 comes out will be my next upgrade. Phones are generally boring 💤 now. Most exciting period was between 2007-2014. I do think 2016 was the GOAT year but it is overrated by me. Phones at 2017 or newer lasted better. Snapdragon 835 was way better than 820. But 2017 was start of every phone looking the same.

Dante Evans, 09 Jul 2021Oh man, Google really made it. This is the uglyest phone on... moreI'm not sure if that intentional camera bump is necessary, but I'd be more than happy to take a horizontal camera island all day. It does look good compared to the trendier vertical camera island. Even a square 2x2 array camera island like on Huawei Mate 20/20 Pro/20X and Motorola One Zoom is a good looker as well.

"According to Prosser, Google is also promising at least five years of software updates, which is great news for the wee crowd of Pixel owners."
Now this can be an enticing prospect as a true iPhone and iOS rival. When you made your own chipset, you can basically update the phone for as long as you like.
As for the phone itself, I'm really eyeing the Pro's 48MP telephoto camera. That is easily a direct rival to the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra and last year's Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra since they also have a 48MP telephoto camera.

I would definitely get this phone if it's priced reasonably within the $1000- mark anything above and it would be blown out of the competition by phones with max performance features such as the ultras of Samsung and Xiaomi. But really for $1000 getting a 5k battery, the most out of Google's software with amazing camera hardware, premium Google support ( Though I personally prefer the one ui skin) would be a great deal

But in reality phones have become husband and wife to many🤣.

Anonymous, 09 Jul 2021Let's say both come with android 12 out of box. And ... moreYou're not wrong actually, although I think it'll be cool for bragging right and we it's defeating one of the major criticisms of android in comparison with iOS. Realistically most people don't use the same phone for half a decade and I personally don't think it's something I would ever do personally, would understand those who do however, if it's not broken don't fix it, but most people will change their phones in a duration of anywhere from 1-3 years in matters of wanting a new experience, wanting a better looking phone, wanting a better performing device e.t.c.
