          it is just right...
imagine, nokia spent on r&d and this happened?
i wonder what would happen to relatively new brands when sony "patented" all their contributions to just "aosp" alone?
          how about their other innovations?
          and that of lg?
it is good that newer companies offers "bang for the buck" as they say, but they should be responsible to give "credit" where it is due by respecting patents and not going over contracts...

Anonymous, 10 Jul 2021Realme is now independent brand It's an independent brand "Now" doesn't mean they will re-sign the contracts again. Most of these patents are signed at the parent level, so they can negotiate a better deal and the overhead in design, development and legal are reduced for each brand.
And it might not be the case where Realme is paying Nokia for the patent but Oppo is not.

Anonymous, 10 Jul 2021Ineplus isn't oppo's sub brand get this embedded ... moreOkay, Oneplus is not a Oppo sub brand, it is the best brand in the world, Oneplus fanboy!
But have you read recent news about Oneplus reusing ColorOS? They had been already using Oppo's R&D, design etc and they are going to use most of its platform from design, manufacturing, software, support etc. The fact that you like Oneplus but not Oppo says you are a blind fanboy.
How do you say court does not care how big a company is? The damages done are based on the size itself. If I start a new small company and use Nokia patents without permission there is a chance that Nokia not even care about me.
Royalties might also be tied to the number of devices sold. So selling a huge number of phones means a huge loss in patent revenue for Nokia and a huge sum in settlement ordered by court. And if the parents are used by other non phone devices, then a company like Oppo which produces large set of devices via its own and sub brands is a huge one to tackle, and such a huge company will also have a bigger number of lawyers than a small company and can pay them well to get out of these types of cases.

I dunno the case but tbh many chinese companies heavily owe the other big tech companies like Sony, Nokia, etc. For copying their techs. It's so sad they copied them (without licence)and made more profit than them then they invested the money for further innovation on the same tech that superceded the companies who originated that technology.

Anonymous, 10 Jul 2021Realme is now independent brand It's still under BBK. They are about as independent as OnePlus was. They are and they aren't at the same time. It's like saying Škoda and SEAT are totally independent from Volkswagen. They are, but they really aren't. Which can be seen in both cases where there are similarities between platforms, be it cars or smartphones. Remember how people complained OnePlus phones look the same as certain Oppo phones? That's the "independence" they have. To lower costs they share components or platforms and designs.

Domestoboto, 10 Jul 2021...yet Western companies do nothing but weaponize patents a... moreNokia owns Majority of patents in your phone, from wifi, Bluetooth. Video codecs, touch screen, 2g/3G/4G/5G etc

Because Nokia patents are very crucial at making phones they are called standard essential patents (Sep). And Authorities are limiting Nokia to price them higher, so they are cheap for everyone to Afford them when they make phones.

Companies like Microsoft earn more in Android than Nokia because their patents are not categorized as Sep, so Nokia always earn less than value of its patents.

Nokia spent more than 100B euros in research to make phone you like today, so they don't weaponize their Ip, they made them with their hard earned resources, they have every right to earn something from their inventions.
