It was never meant to be over sharpened. It's realistic.

That´s the problem with recent Nokias (HMD). They simply are on par, they are not inovative in any way.
Take last Nokia 8 Prureview.....was garbage compared to others.

Technology is always evolving. So while the Pureview 808 deserves respect, it is simply outdated & cannot compete with the best of today. And the best of today will be nothing in front of the best of 10 years later. That's just how it goes.

Nick Tegrataker, 20 Jul 2021Nokia didn't really crush anything in the shadows, if ... moreYeah, Huawei's lens is better, technically in almost every way it seems. But compare the mi 11 ultra in the same ISO 12233 chart. Despite having 12 more megapixels, it could not take the advantage of extra resolution and take it all the way. The defenition just isn't there. There also seems to be some fringing from around 31-36 mark.
https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=1&idPhone1=4577&idCamera2=300788&idCamera3=300545
Regarding shadows, the ultra definitely has lifted the shadows a little bit despite the overall contrast being higher. The difference in transition from bright wall to the dark window shows that.
Also I think we may have overanalyzed a bit.

I-one, 21 Jul 2021You should have compared Nokia to some midrange smartphone ... moreNo. This was fine and showed many things. Showed how much better in some aspects the 808 still is after all this time.

You should have compared Nokia to some midrange smartphone (like A52 or something like this). It would have been more interesting. I mean how an affordable phone can match the old cameraphone)))

Carol, 19 Jul 2021Well then learn to express yourself cause you probably mean... moreDid you miss out that this whole time I have been referring to the lens sharpness and not the sharpening added by the software? I already stated in my very first comment for this article that the detail processing itself is more natural on N808.

Rkm, 18 Jul 2021That seems more of a dynamic range issue rather than a shar... moreNokia didn't really crush anything in the shadows, if anything the overall image contrast is lower on N808 and colours in shadows are also better maintained on it as a result. The structures inside the building on N808's shot are, however, not as well defined as those from M11 Ultra, which would be really odd if the lens was at least equally sharp between the devices (again, the lack of extra sharpening isn't the cause here).
GSMArena's ISO 12233 comparison chart shows mild blurring of lines starting from around 32-36 marks on N808 - for a comparison, Mate 20 Pro equipped with 40MP sensor resolved those lines with ease in the full resolution mode. So it's pretty clear that N808's lens resolution is not as high as it should be.

808 performance is still very good.
Photos of Mi11U look like the SW is making the most of the job, a lot of after effect and sharpening, while 808 has more "natural" photos.

Nick Tegrataker, 18 Jul 2021By "sharper" I was literally referring to the len... moreWell then learn to express yourself cause you probably mean, more detailed. In reality, it is not, that artificial sharpness makes it look like it would be better detailed, zooming in to 100 will clearly show how it desintegrates while 808 is smooth and it might seem blury, but it actually holds a lot of detail and is darn close to a proper camera.

And nope, those night shots xiaomi does are not night shot are an ugly interpretation of what should e have been night but endet in a light disaster. Ajusting the shuterspeed and put in a tripod would give the 808 an advantage that crapomy does not have, it is called natural AI-less photography.
