Anonymous, 18 Jul 2021This shows why a bayer sensor with lots of MP phased out. H... more"Quad bayer can solve all of those issues at once"? Look at what the Quad Bayer sensor has done to the Xiaomi photo quality. Couple that with constant AI interruption, I'd be more than happy to take a normal Bayer sensor. Don't ever say that normal Bayer phased out, DSLR and Mirrorless camera are still using it. True lossless zoom is something that the Quad Bayer sensor cannot enjoy much because of the rearranged pixel.

Trooper, 18 Jul 2021Well, it's taken them 9 years to get there, while Noki... moreNokia, was a head of its time. Back then many were not concerned about camera/phone like they are today. KUDOS to Nokia and others for starting a trend.

Most pointless comparison in the world. Almost all smartphones have good cameras. If it isn't enough just buy a regular camera and not a smartphone.

Rather than comparing with one of the best Camera phones in the market, tshould compare it with a midranger

Shui8, 18 Jul 2021Well this is a smartphone website afterall, not specificall... moreGsmarena doesn't do that though. They just provide the sample, mention the general quality and leave other stuff as it is. That's what I like about them. I was referring to some youtubers earlier. Everyone should in fact look at the sample available here. Photo comparison tool is so useful.
I wouldn't blame youtubers too though. That's their job and it sells. That's what people want and they give it to them. I just wouldn't adhere to their recommendations.

"Xiaomi may be too… expressive in terms of color, exposure, contrast, or whatnot"
It's just that Xiaomi has an excessive amount of sharpening, same as my Samsung A52. My old Sony A6000 has a much more natural look to its photos, despite using cheap lens on a very old sensor. For most shots I prefer A52, though, simply because it is always in my pocket. But for dedicated photo sessions I'd rather take my full-sized camera (and, maybe, upgrade to a full-frame... although I'd still prefer not having to process RAW files).

What they want to show more towards its camera CAPABILITIES, daylight, indoors, lowlight, its features and Auto mode, whereas 90% of smartphone users will use, rather than showing some photography SKILLS.

Honestly, I'm ok with that. Pretty sure most of us as well. If one got the skills, they'll take the advantage on what the camera capable of.

My issue is when reviewers choose terrible photos just because it has shadows lifted and highlight brought down. Just because you have a lot of DR doesn't mean you have to use it all the time. Some phones tries to control the sun, the goddamn sun and make it a round ball on the sky. It's OK to blow some highlights. Currently it is taboo to blow any part of the image even if it make the subject look bad. It will get better and algorithms will improve, but we are currently in dynamic range appreciation phase.
I actually appreciate Xiaomi because they are conservative to an extent. Even though they have a lot of DR, they do try to make the photo artistically pleasing.
Computational Raws from phones are great now. The apple proraw and pixel computational raw have all the data from stacking / merging without applying any processing. Try it out, they are great.

DR gain is so so much better eventhough sensor size below 1", can get up to 13-14 stops (near FF level! But computational JPEG only, RAW still limited by the sensor size).

What you suggesting is an effect that playing with light & shadow, which professionals photography prefer more rather than HDR flat look (what our eyes sees). The thing is, modern phone can took both. Easily by disable HDR, using light metering, exposure level or fiddling with manual mode. However ancient 808 DR level is limited, act like a real camera with no computational to imitate bigger sensor camera. I'll prefer the modern method in smartphone more.

Do not forget 808 has old sensor with old tech.
Sensor from 2021 with same specs would provide much better results even with exactly same software in terms of DR, signal to noise ratio etc ...

The 2022 phones do need variable aperture like F2.0 - F2.4 - F2.8 to avoid all that blur when people take closeup shots.

that fixes much of the hazy & dim look of 808 & warmer look of 1020 & probably has better HDR (if u really want that flat look sometimes) through RichCapture/HDR. It can also record 4k@24/25/30fps which is in line with today in terms of res & also please compare the superior AUDIO CAPTURE at higher dB.
