And while some people (a loud minority actually) laugh at privacy, and many don't care about it, they should, and they will learn the lesson the hard way when there will be no coming back.
UDC is the worse solution ever for privacy.
The cost, that people do care about, will be a big issue when they'll stop selling at a loss and show the true ridiculous cost of UDC.
The quality that will never be better than a potato, or the display that'll always be affected by it (you can't have both) will also be a regret when it will be clear that there is a limit to how much you can improve this tech, because shockingly, we can't see through a wall by squinting really hard, and for the same reason, we can't get a clear and perfect quality picture by looking through a blurry glass with hundreds of pixels and wires in front of the camera.

Regardless, Why it couldn't?
Because face recognition, 2D or 3D, require RAW quality, the UDC have a truly horrible and laughable RAW quality, it has tons of software compensations, which is THE LAST THING you want for any biometric, software, AI or not, will apply a "generic human face looks like that, so I'll fix what I think isn't correct with this one to a generic one" treatment.
Not only it kills the few usable details that a human wouldn't spot at a glance, but it replaces them with things that make the whole face even harder for a computer to differentiate from others.
It CAN do it, but the result will be awful and extremely poorly secure.
For 3D face recognition, add to that inner glare, reflections, degradation of both the output and input quality and optical aberrations that will alter the infrared which won't be a problem for a picture seen by a person but a big deal for a computer trying to make a millimeter precise 3D map.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but not only technically the Asus Zenfone qualify, but more importantly, the Nubia Z20, Vivo Nex Dual Display, and some foldables like the Huawei Mate X all have no front facing camera.
And people would have probably said the same some years ago if we were to talk about phones without 3.5mm Jack.
I don't want this underdisplay camera nonsense and people will learn the hard way why they also shouldn't, and I'll be there laughing and saying "I told you so".
This horror gimmick is the antichrist of privacy.
Alternatively, I LARGELY prefer pop up camera over UDC and I can't wait for the UDC to actually show how bad it really is so pop up comeback and phones without front camera become more popular.

Slapyomama69, 29 Jul 2021Let me guess, No Face ID unlocking aaaaand video calling on... moreIf you care so much about video call and the size of the display for it, go buy a Galaxy Fold or a tablet and lets people who wait for finally a phone without front camera (which sadly isn't the case here) for non socially dependent and obsessed drones who can't live without video calls.
When proper phones without front facing camera, but good 3D sensors on the back get a thing, 3D face recognition will be more effective than it has ever been, unlocking the phone would be as simple as flipping the wrist.
Punch holes killed 3D face recognition by forcing to have only a single camera up front, or to switch from the Structured Light which is great at scanning up-close to the inferior ToF never meant for that, UDC will continue the trend by causing the RAW quality to be so awful the security will be laughable.
If you want Face ID tech, then advocate for phones like this with a hybrid ToF and SL on the back, or an equivalent to the Oppo Find X.
