Google's "custom" Tensor SoC might be just an unreleased Exynos

06 August 2021
The chipset will be manufactured by Samsung, but it seems like there's more to that company's participation in the project.

I think this processor will be preety good basically the optimization as google owns the software environment so it will be easy for them to optimize it in the best way and if the performance is atleast on par with sd870 it will be great at least for first so called in house developed processor. So lets see optimization will be the biggest factor here rather than cpu or gpu

Kolev3000, 07 Aug 2021That is important too ! And how they gonna trickle down ... moreSame main camera and older wide angle camera? and some 700 series chipset? i will gladely take that if you ask me

It probably has generous hardware for AI along with smaller cores, A78 max and no X1. Google was already confident enough with releasing the Pixel 5 based on the SD765 so sacrificing die area to boast about AI seems logical, while dodging the question of thermal management.

Now that would be slightly disappointing to have a rebranded exynos, after all the google's blablabla about this new SoC

The rumor the whole time was that it was co-developed with Samsung so none of this is "news" per se. If it's a Samsung Exynos with some extra Google features then that's still pretty custom.

Anonymous 2.0, 07 Aug 2021Samsung is developing any chipsets of 98** series Or 96** ... moreMore like Co-develop with Hisilicon.
Kirin 810(2019) and its subsequent 820 were comparable to SD765G when Samsung was selling 9611.

I think it’s wonderful news, in fact. Google tease the AI/ML capabilities of the processor…It was, visibly, never the intention of Google to revolutionize the CPU/GPU performance of a first-gen in-house chip (Apple fully design their chip only by the iPhone 5 in 2012)…

If we remember, the first leak of Whitechapel back in April point toward SD865/870 CPU/GPU performance comparaison…Now we’re more toward SD888/+ maybe more….And we don’t count the AI/ML performance that Google show off this week that no one can do right now in the industry !

Also, the rumor of a rebranded 5nm Exynos for the Pixel 6 comes back from July 2020…The question was always how Google can do their own sauce with it….And they deliver it base on what they show to the media this week…

They need a successor of 9611 for A, M series!

If this is true then a great disappointment from google. We thought a new chip maker (designer) is in the market which will forced others to improve and be cost-effective, but alas it's just another rebranding.
                          Expected much more from google.

Damn I really hope this isnt true. Samsung can't even optimize their Exynos chips in their own phones, they consistently get outperformed by snapdragon every year. I was hoping google was truly doing their own SoC that they'd optimize, but if this is true I got serious doubts that this will be any diff from the upcoming international Samsung S22s which I bet will lose out to snapdragon again

No custom component from Google? Just a Samsung chip? I'd think Google would have at least some input in the chip.

After all that hype, it's just a modified/a little different exynos 2100?

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

If it turns out to be a good chip, then whatever... but for all of the hype Google's created around Tensor, it sure seems disappointing that it's just a rebadged unreleased chip from Samsung
