Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro to use Samsung GN1 50MP sensor

12 August 2021
This would be the sensor under the main camera lens.

Peo... moreMaybe I do not explain, you can enter reddit Android and you will realize, users of other brands are going to attack pixel users, "My cape is better than stock" or whatever, but I never see any in the submarine, or in this case publication of other brands saying "Stock is better than One UI or MIUI"

It is great when you compare GN1 to old tiny and very outdated IMX363 in sensor size and features, BUT... GN1 is already year and a half old, used in Vivo X50 Pro+ and X60 Pro+ and also lower end phone Tecno Phantom X.

So in the end it is not that great sensor when you think about high-end flagship that is being released in near end of 2021, and a phone that will probably cost over 1000 dollars/euros. GN1 price must be pretty low at this point and feels like Google cheaping out again.

Really expected a better and newer sensor that won't be outdated in a few upcoming years, not to mention that really expected it to be as rumors suggested a custom made Sony IMX sensor, which was rumored to be a new 50MP sensor in 1/1.18" size or at least 1/1.28", that were suppose to be for Pixel 6 line and upcoming Xperia flagship. And I am not talking about rumored 1 inch Sony sensor that would be just too good to be true. Or at least GN2.

Really wished for sensor that were capable of 4K 120FPS, bigger pixels and better auto focus.

So good to see a pixel with good hardware

They don't explain how, but it could be a dual pixel super resolution algorithm that leverages the fact that dual pixel sensors can take two photos simultaneously(!), but from a slightly different(!) perspective.

OhNom, 13 Aug 2021"24.4 due to dual pixels" In that you are wron... moreNo, it's not wrong. In order to focus, 24 million pixels are read out separately. That's why Canon's dual pixel raw files have twice the file size of conventional raw files. A 12 megapixel dual pixel sensor can capture two different(!) 12 megapixel photos simultaneously (!). The reason why 12 megapixel dual pixel sensors don't give you 24 megapixel photos has to do with the microlenses. Every microlens covers two (sub)pixels. This has the consequence that a 24 megapixel photo wouldn't give you more detail than a 12 megapixel one.

In that you are wrong, they only use 2 photodiodes per pixel, not 2 pixels to focus the same

Wrong, 12 Aug 2021Wrong, it is the same Sony IMX 700 / 707 1/1.28" size ... moreP50 sensor is not 1/1.28", its smaller at 1/1.5".

The 6 should be pretty close in size, but it's more of a price thing. Seeing how the Pixel 5 was $700 for a plastic phone I don't have high hopes for pricing on the Pixel 6. I prefer smaller phones, but there are some things I want from the 5a still.

Dude, stop being snowflake lunatics, Google doesn't give 2 sheets about watching you, even if you were Kim Kardashian, they just want to know all the things you like so that they can bombard you with ads that make them the trillion dollar company they are. For real, I don't know what these people think it's so interesting about them to watch, not even pervert hackers would hack you if they knew hot to do it. Stop thinking you are so interesting people, so full of yourselves, that's why you are here being sour towards brands who don't care a bit about what you write, because no one wants to have fun with people like that...

Here's a summary which main camera sensor + lens specs Google had in the past:
                                Nexus 5x: 29.3mm² + 4.67mm f/2 lens, 12.2 megapixels
                                Pixel 1: 29.3mm² + 4.67mm f/2 lens, 12.2 megapixels
                                Pixel 2: 23.9mm² + 4.44mm f/1.8 OIS lens, 12.2 megapixels (actually 24.4 due to dual pixels)
                                Pixel 3: 23.9mm² + 4.44mm f/1.8 OIS lens, 12.2 megapixels (actually 24.4)
                                Pixel 4: 23.9mm² + 4.38mm f/1.73 OIS lens, 12.2 megapixels (actually 24.4)
                                Pixel 5: 23.9mm² + 4.38mm f/1.73 OIS lens, 12.2 megapixels (actually 24.4)
Pixel 6 (likely): 72.2mm² + f/1.9 lens, 12.5 megapixels with Bayer array, 50.1 megapixels with Quad Bayer array (actually 100.3), no reliable rumor about OIS yet.

I hope that they bring back laser autofocus (Nexus 5x, Pixel 1) as the dual pixel autofocus of the Pixel 3a is very bad.

YUKI93, 12 Aug 2021Vivo and Xiaomi also use Samsung sensors for their flagship... moreNo doubts that Google's image processing algorithm is superior to anybody else and Pixel 6 will get the most out of it. I'm just saying that Google, as always, decided to go with cheaper, already outdated last year sensor which is annoying.

Right, you let me know how amazing the results are on a sensor with pixels smaller than red wavelengths, then come back to me. Also, what do you mean by "that number is secondary on this type of sensor"

                                    "Classic Sony shlll."
                                    Nice coping response, stay delusional.

"That's why no one likes Sony and their pathological liar sales reps."

Yeah nobody likes Sony, that's why the fan favourite device on this website is the Xperia 1 ii. Regardless, it doesn't matter everyone is free to have a preference for their favourite device.

I don't have a particular problem with Samsung, I just don't like QB sensors personally whether it's from Sony or Samsung, but I understand that is how companies achieve their results with the exception of like 3 companies. I find it annoying when randoms come in to bash excessively. I also really wanted to look at this phone, but I feel like with a QB sensor would ruin the phone, unless the AI's greatly improved.

I just said that if Samsung focuses on smaller pixels, then they won't be doing well.

"Why repeat same thing again and again in every article?"

I can ask the same for literally every anonymous person that responds to me when I never even mentioned Xperia. I don't even repeat this point on every article, I've talked about it in like 2 others including the original article that mentioned it.

I insist, they needed time to gather training examples for their AI models, GN2 have just a couple of months on the market. The AI and the TPU will do the magic, I mean, they will be able to run the HDRnet AI algorithm at 4k 30fps, THAT will be a game changer.
