under display unlock technologies will be the new hype for smartphones.with the struggles of covid mask usage, face ID will probably be replaced.

Anonymous, 18 Aug 2021People wear gloves or have wet hands much more frequently. ... moreThough, ultrasonic FPS have a much better capability to read wet fingers than optical and capacitive ones.
Still, a 3D face recognition + Ultrasonic FPS (in display, on the side or the back, regardless) combo is better than either.

zaryan, 18 Aug 2021With face mask these days apple face id doesn't work wellApple failed to implement partial face recognition, that's why, and you don't ALWAYS wear a mask, nor it will last forever.

Anonymous, 18 Aug 2021I'd much rather have a secure face recognition unlock,... moreUltrasonic FPS are as secure as 3D face recognition.
And why not simply have both?
This logic of "one or the other" make absolutely no senses, those are different with different people liking one or the other.

Anonymous, 18 Aug 2021I hope none adopts that one that uses 2 fingers. One that FORCE to use two fingers?
Yeah, I too hope that no one adopt that.

But that CAN use two fingers?
I hope EVERYONE will adopt it!!!

              FINALLY!
Samsung first botched implementation of the FIRST GEN Ultrasonic FPS on the S10, Note10, S20 and Note20 made people think ultrasonic FPS were slow and bad, despite being actually better (for a first gen) once patched compared to the first gen optical FPS.

Funnily enough, the arguments of people who disagree about what I said about underdisplay camera is "it is only the first gen" while some of the same people spit on the ultrasonic FPS despite it being literally in its first gen too...
Note that UDC is a different story, there are real physical limitations that just can't be fixed.

Nevertheless, ultrasonic FPS are BY FAR the BEST type, the capacitive aren't as good, and the optical ones are far behind.

Once good ones are done (still second gen for Samsung and Qualcomm and first gen for Vivo and Meizu on the Meizu 18 and 18 Pro commercialized sensors), they'll replace the two others, they can be put on the back, side, under the display, they can offer larger area, they have true 3D (capacitive aren't really 3D reading) and they have a lot of potential that is yet to be utilized, such as reading material density to AUTOMATICALLY reject oil, grease, screen protector, water, thin gloves, and other things, while checking what it looks at is indeed human (and even living) flesh, it can also map the veins to check they are both here, and they match the user and look for a heartbeat for higher security level requiring longer press, but also check the liquid match blood density, and even check the distal phalanx in there and its basic shape.
Making fooling one who would use 100% of the sound imaging capabilities it can allow near impossible, it would also double as a heartbeat monitor, allow combining easily fingerprint and pin/pattern for those who want to use it.
And it is size scalable, unlike the camera used in optical FPS, making it much better for the user.

THIS, is why I advocate them, they are faster, more reliable, more secure, and still only utilize like 20% of their full potential at the moment.

We just need 3D face recognition to also make a comeback (and no, not those awful ToF based, I talk about the true Structured Light ones) on Android, so user can either use FPS, 3D face recognition, or both combined, with a totally independent security chip handling all of it, for both privacy, but also allowing to works on the deepest level, meaning it would protect the bootloader and recovery, making steeling smartphones totally useless!

                Nice
