4 years later I still think Apple did the opposite of what it should have done.
I have been using my Surface Book for 5 years and a few Sony Xperia devices over the years... and my opinion is that for a phone, fingerprint scanner is the best solution, and for a laptop, face recognition (windows hello) is also the best solution.
At any given time, my phone will be on a table, desk, nightstand, etc. and simple touching the fingerprint sensor will instantly unlock it. Also when I am taking it out of my pockets I grab it in such a way that one of my registered fingers unlocks it before the phone reaches my face (side fingerprint scanner are best for this).
As for the laptop, simply opening the lid will wake it up and unlock it by seeing me. Newer models are even faster and more reliable.
Apple should have follow Sony and integrate the fingerprint scanner "ToUcH iD" into their iPhone's power button, and they should have followed Microsoft and implement their face recognition hardware "FaCe iD" onto their Macbooks instead.

Crapvid-19 did it!

I switched back to iphone from Samsung because i wasn't happy with the performance of exynos but face id is just pathetic. Apple simply walked into their local biometrics store, bought several hundred million Face ID systems and threw them into the production line, job done……
Boy, the level of simple thinking on this is just staggering 🤦♂️

They should add a smart MagSafe case that adds a fingerprint reader to the power button, probably redundant and expensive and should just be added to the phone but I would get it.

I always hated that ugly notch.
Also, during the pandemic, everytime one had to lower their masks to unlock their phones, which goes against the very idea of avoiding touching your face.
Touch ID was so much better. Apple should have come up with under the display touch ID type solution, but we know their efforts and focus is purely on profits, not what iPhone users have been wanting for years. I've moved onto fingerprint scanner based phones for good.
Apple can continue with their notch and face ID, I don't care.

Angle of face scanning is very wide actually, i unlock my phone all the time when it's on my work desk. Couldn't do it with iPhone X, but with iPhone 11 Pro it's working quite well.
Craziest part is when you unlock your phone from side of the phone, you don't even need to be front of your phone it to work. just take the phone like 3,5 inch left or right and it will still work, you going to be surprised if you haven't tested this yet!

while face ID offer a convenient way of unlocking your phone, it also come with problems.
1. The angle of face scanning is narrow, you can't unlock your phone while it's on a table.
2. Unlocking your phone when you are under sunlight is also a problem
3. Wearing mask or glasses will increase fail rate
While Touch ID problem are:
1. Wet finger increase fail rate
2. Can't unlock your phone while wearing glove
The best solution is to combine both method.
