Anonymous, 26 Aug 2021I think to achieve this, the system will have to have such ... moreNot necessarily, Apple isn't the best possible implementation of the tech, it is the best available implementation, this is a huge difference.
The phone use Structured Light to scan the face, in their case, they use a static variant who simply shoot 30,000 dots, which looks like this :
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0BALFPSmRk (Epilepsy warning!!!!)

But there are a LOT of other ways to scans, from lines to other patterns, even including colors, but more importantly, when used as a 3D scanner, it is almost always used as a dynamic variant, which rather than using a fixed pattern, use a moving one, it is often done using multiple lines, but many solutions exist, mainly now with the power of artificial neural networks, and the result is extremely accurate :
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P4zTtDLJv8
And dynamic one can work in near real time too, it is mainly limited by your processing capabilities.
And what is visible of a face around the mask and glasses is already a lot.
If a company was to also add UV light into the mix, the result would be even more accurate, as skin naturally have a complex UV visible only pattern :
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyH-b_LDlSY
A simple and armless quick flash of UV class A light is more than enough.
It can help to detect makeup and other face "masks" when something like sunscreen prevent to see the natural skin pattern, still helping to improve the IR side.
Combining IR and UV not only make the whole thing much more secure in general, but it also helps against foggy glasses.

So in the end, you can have a great 3D face recognition tech, much better than Apple's Face ID that can easily works with masks and glasses.

A great phone should NOT lock a user onto a single security system, but rather provide multiple ones, this mean BOTH Face ID and Touch ID (a capacitive one on the side/back meanwhile ultrasonic in display one are satisfactory for them).

My cycle with Apple is I always love their products at first and then I eventually hate them.

      iPod 5th gen
      iPhone 1st gen
      iPhone 4
      iPhone SE
      iPhone 12 mini
      AirPods 2
      Apple Watch Series 2

Either their restrictions starts annoying me or they get slow and stop being reliable. Just out of the blue, my 12 mini wouldn't sync with my Mac yesterday. Sold it fast.

My AWS2 is now acting up where the bottom side button feels stuck. It's what I double tap for Apple Pay. My AirPods would disconnect a lot. I hink only my MacBook Air is the only Apple product I didn't end up hating. Still runs well after 5 years.

I'm sticking with Android. Apple is just a status symbol that's essentially worthless in its core.

What?!? :) in-display scanners didn't exist when Face ID came. And Face ID is way better than any in-display scanners which are still hit and miss, put a screen protector and you are asking problems, some works some doesn't.

Problem with fingerprint scanners are that you always need to touch something to register it. So everytime you need to use you need to think it, it's not intuitive. For example my whatsapp and banking apps are behind lock but it doesn't feel like they are because they just open without me doing anything. Face ID is invisible lock and those security scanners which works without any touch are the future, no doubt about it, not the ones where you need to touch something everytime you need it.

kiasunkiasi, 26 Aug 2021precisely... which reminded me about an article saying USS... moreExcept that there is a reason to not use pencil, not only the graphite shards are a hazard in space for many reasons (filtration system, can get in eyes, can negatively affect some experiments) and they are both conductive (can create a short) and flammable, but also the fact a pencil need to be sharpened, and the tip can easily break accentuate the issues caused by debris but also make it that if in use while on EVA, with the big gloves of the suit, if you break the fragile tip you can't just sharpen it again.
At the end of the day, those pens actually turned into a profitable company, and now they are made and sold for anyone who want to under the name of Fisher Space Pen.
It cost 30$, which is not a lot of considering it last a long time (years of regular uses) and doesn't dry while writing in conditions that make it handy in some jobs.

Here, it is the same story, a good 3D face recognition, combined with a good ultrasonic FPS, providing the user have the choice to use either but also to combine the two to get exponential security, that data is stored locally with no access from the OS, and that it protect the bootloader and recovery, so it makes the phone virtually useless to steal, it IS the best tech development.
Regardless, many still use 2D face recognition as a commodity even when a fingerprint scanner is available, it is a no-brainer to swap this low security method that don't work on low light conditions for a better one that does and is really hard to fool.

I think to achieve this, the system will have to have such tolerances that it will be dangerous to use for payment authentication. Apple really messed up with going for Face ID instead of adopting an in-display fingerprint sensor.

                            Breaking news.

TSMC says 2022 3nm process delayed, now it says Apple camt use 3nm for next year and will stick with 4nm in both 2021 and 2022

                            Shame.

You know what works great with masks and glasses? A fingerprint scanner! Amazing right?

Just bring back Touch ID. I want to unlock my phone without looking at it or my phone is in my pocket or laying on a table. One of the reasons I sold my 12 mini was because I just couldn't get into Face ID. Probably why I will never get a Pixel 4.

So annoying since I do wear glasses and a mask but I registered my face without wearing either one. It won't unlock if I'm lying down and I need to hold the phone a certain way only to still not register between 20%-50% of the time. Any thing with fingerprint is better.
