Are foldable phones better for multimedia? Here is how the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 stack up

06 September 2021
We've done some calculations of how well different content fits on their screens, e.g. a 4:3 photo, a 16:9 video and so on.

I'm seeing these tri-fold concepts and even the rollable displays on YouTube. The Flip 3 and Fold 3 look outdated by comparison already! Even the Pixel Fold which hadn't been released yet feels outdated.

Tri-fold which is really a double-fold looks very interesting especially if in tent mode.

PS. I dont hate LG, owned a few over the years, unfortunately, as we can see now, the companies dominating the sales are the companies which doesnt only have hundreds of different phone models to offer a wide range of consumers, but also the companies who are not afraid to innovate and experiment. However, the LG G8X and the LG wings are obviously not in the right direction.

Reality check: There are probably 100x more active Fold users than Surface Duo users, and that's with a price tag exceeding a decent ultra book laptop.

It's nice to see Microsoft spend time on developing Android, but the Surface Duo is DOA. It's a useless design without a genuine solution to any problem.

I do love the battery protection feature on my Flip 3. Doesn't charge beyond on 85%. Battery will last for years. I read somewhere that some guy had a 5-year-old Samsung with 93% battery health by doing the 80/40 or 80/20 thing.

The most important things to me from a phone is battery health and maintaining that same Day 1 UI performance. The rest like design and novelty features are meaningless to me. Mostly gimmicky features to keep us upgrading. A lot of it is superficial.

I enjoy my Flip 3 but I wouldn't go far to say it's my absolute favorite. It's still new, so of course new owners will say they love it. Still in the honeymoon phase.

I still have issues with the look of One UI and Samsung bloat. I still feel foldable displays are a gimmick like curved displays were. Between the Flip 3 or Fold 3, I feel the Fold 3 is better at EVERYTHING and way more practical but is too cumbersome to carry with me the all the time.

I'm not completely sold on foldables. But perhaps in time, I'll say I will never go back to a boring slab ever again. It's cray because before I got my Flip 3, I was very optimistic with foldables. Since August 27, I've become less bullish like this is just a fad like curved displays were. Most of these companies are selling us gimmicks.

I own both Surface Duo and Galaxy Z Fold2, and guess which one I use as my daily driver. If your answer is the Samsung, then you are completely WRONG. I put my SIM card in the Microsoft and really loving the whole user experience with it, especially when using two different apps simultaneously without any interruption. As for the Z Fold2, I only use it for my DeX-connected WFH environment. Up to this day, I never leave that Samsung outside my house.

As much as I like to see innovation, the normal 16:9 tablet still wins me. I don't mind having a tablet with a slightly taller 16:10 screen.

It's been 3 years now and they still haven't removed or even reduced that hideous crease.

I can't wait until Apple makes a foldable (which I will preorder immediately). It will be much better than Samsungs foldables.
