2020 : Mi 10 (global) , mi 10 pro (global) , mi 10 ultra (China only)
2021: Mi 11 (global) , Mi 11 pro (China only) , Mi 11 ultra (global)
2022: mi 12 (global) , Mi 12 pro (global/this phone) , Mi 12 ultra (China)
Probably vanilla mi 12 will be like mi 11 pro, not a huge upgrade but welcome one

But don't get me wrong, I would love for this one to be the vanilla, so vanilla high-end devices start to have things like Periscope Telephoto as default.

Besides a shallow depth of field, what are the points? Soft edges? Bigger price? More problems with stabilisation and processing?!
Apple uses an 12mp small sensor but with bigger photodiodes, which gives them a lot of advantages: sharper images, more effective stabilisation, greater speed read out, lower heat on chip and sensor, lower price.
You should ask for: bigger photodiodes, better lenses, lower resolution (10 years ago DSLRs with 5, 8, 12, 16mp were the norm and the quality was more than ok), better DR etc.
I prefer an 12mp/2" and an dedicated 3x 12mp/2", than an 50mp/1'1.2"

Sensor is made to have 4 , 9 or 16 "same colour" photodiodes together.
You cannot switch.
It is nature of the hardware.
HMX is tetracell. It is impossible to force it do 9 to 1 like HM1/HM2/HM3.

Smaller files, no quality loss.
The other 4:3 sizes seen on cam app of all phones is downsampling.
Not real lower resolution.
You can use it.

Sports cam do not have high resolution because their focus is speed.
Also, photos are taken often in jpeg to be quickly used on social media.
50, 60, 100MP for sports is nothing covenient.
