Shadocx, 21 Sep 2021Most companies seems to be cropping into the binned low res... moreWell I haven't seen Xiaomi but for croping both approaches can work
In case of Realme 8 Pro the phone captures 8 consecutive 12MP images stacks them and crops
In case of Huawei Nova 7i it captures multiple 48MP images and than crops
I'm not sure but I think stacking max res should give better result in day time and binned should give better in low light though it isn't confirmed cause most phones just crop and upscale at night

I believe 3x3 binning would bring the best of both worlds - 20+mp resolution, which balances the amount of resolved detail outside of mobile phone (on a computer screen or a TV) with relatively large total pixel area. My S7 had 12mp images, and they're awesome. My new A52 has less punchy colors but 64->16mp sensor resolves noticeably more detail. When I compared S7 with S21, I could barely find any difference - when zoomed in, pictures were almost identical (S21 was better, but only very slightly so, A52 had more noticeable clarity... I wish I could control sharpness, though).

But no phone maker is gonna do it, because of costs.

Unless you check raw files, you cant tell if for example which is better between GN1 and HMX. Or even Imx700/700y.
Raw files from imx689 is better than raw files out of another chinese phone that uses bit larger sensor.

Esmejo, 21 Sep 2021Basically the 200mpx its a gimmick since the real deal will... moremany people calling gimmick seems miss-understand something.
the sensor is 200mp and use 200mp to binning the image, thus nothing wrong for samsung to market it as 200mp sensor, no?
They got 50mp sensor also, comparing to 108mp there still some benefit from high-mp pixel bining, so expect this similar to 200mp.
Now whether the improvement is good enough or not, each person can judge by themselves.
what important point is that better for them to keep making new sensor, rather than stuck with current technology.
i am guessing, soon enough this high-mp sensor will reach limit anyway.

the only advantage this sensor have over GN2 is the multi sampling feature, with no narrow pov 8k recording
the ISP in flagship SOC wont have enough speed even for next year, next year isp will enough for 108mp but 200mp will need 1s capture and the quality is obviously won't good as the isp barely can capture the entire 200mp. This is the same case as the snapdragon 865 which only capable 64mp but used with 108mp sensor, the quality is not as sharp as 48mp sensor ,ex imx 586 with OIS in oppo reno 10x zoom vs hmx 108mp with OIS in mi10t pro (2nd gen implementation after mi10) the image have less detail

Would love to see this with a very bright lens (f1.5?), and some new smartphone lens technology that has extremely high contract, very low flare and extreme high detail levels. That may do justice to the very high pixel count.

Aierlan, 21 Sep 2021At least the sensor size at 1/1.22" is bigger than the... moreIt's probably not as good. On paper it sounds good but if they aren't putting it in their own flagships then something must not be right somewhere. Not to say it's bad but it's probably as as impressive as it sounds. Or maybe they just have no idea how to harness the power of it lol. Let's see if Google can set a new bar for others to catch up with the Pixel 6 since it's a massive upgrade in camera hardware.

Esmejo, 21 Sep 2021Basically the 200mpx its a gimmick since the real deal will... moreBecause 200MP can grab more attention from costumers compared to 12-16MP, even if both have same size and output photos of same resolution.
It is like those cheaper phones with 4 cameras, where two are useless macro/depth.
They are useless, but still you can advertise as 4 cameras being better than having 2 or 3.
Most of clients surely do not know these cameras output mostly 12/12.5MP instead of resolution advertised.
Nobody needs to care about the size of files being like 40MB.

Wayne Morellini, 21 Sep 2021Going by your article. I'm surprised there is no stri... moreDual gain thing on Arrii is one complex technology, it's not as simple as merging two signals together. One could argue that HDRI process embeded in a cellphone sensor is the same phylosophy but not even stacking image procedure is remotley the same. What we have on mobile sensors is crude and primal HDRI implementation. Most stuff happens once the signal leaves the sensor anyway. And while the final result from cellphones is in domain "its' okay or good enough" they will never be able to do what Arri or Canon are doing right now due to physical limitations. One day they would be able to emulate that via software effects like VSTs are emulating hardware right now with very little CPU power but that day is not remotely close today. Video on a cellphone is at least single generation behind the video on dedicated video cameras, if not more.
