iPhone 13 mini matches the 12 Pro Max in DxOMark's camera tests, 13 Pro places 4th overall

28 September 2021
While they weren't the most exciting upgrades, the cameras on the iPhone 13 series are very competitive.

But the fact that probably 95% of the photos are shared/viewed on mobile devices and not pixel peeping makes mobile photography a much better platform unless you required the speed or for professional usage.

Huawei is a dead brand, not sure why it is still involved in any conversation about smartphones.

If smartphone cameras continue to improve, they will eat up GoPro's market share.

these are at launch scores. OS updates improves cameras in time. so, 12pro max would beat 13mini with the same OS version.

Even when u zoom 50%, u will clearly tell if the photo is taken on a smartphone or proper camera. Just checked the dxo full res photos and the pictures have artificial looking textures, noise reduction and over sharpening. No one can mistake it for a proper camera photo.

Android user but my partner uses iPhone and I'm tempted to jump ship. The cameras are excellent and the colour science is a brilliant balance of neutral and slightly warmer leaning. Skin tones are excellent as well and dynamic range looks alot more natural than before. I wouldn't be surprised if mobiles catch up with ilc up to 70mm within a few generations. Computational bokeh and cinematic moods plus the stacking abilities are improving in leaps.

The iPhone 3G, 7, 8, XS, and 13 were some of the smallest upgrades in iPhone history but what were some of the biggest upgrades minus the 2G?

Probably the X even though I find it overrated. The 3GS and 4S had a much beefier SoC than their predecessors. The 5S and 6S were big upgrades from their predecessor even if they looked the same. The 11 and 12 were just mild upgrades.

We can't expect Apple to reinvent the wheel every year. Even with Galaxy S or Pixel, the improvements have been quite minimal the last 5 years. The Pixel 2 and 3 are nearly the same. Google used the same camera sensor for four generations.

Macaulay Culkin, 28 Sep 2021I haven't trusted DxO in years. Just a paid influencer... moreAll reviews are not objective. They will be influenced by the reviewers subjective bias and preferences. Listing the specs would be objective. At least Dxomark include a lot of repeatable tests conducted with professional equipment within their reviews though unlike many reviews which just look at the photos with their own eyes and give their subjective opinions

Where iPhones truly shines is video recording. The preferred device for YouTube content creators. They've been class-leading with this since iPhone 4. I mostly dislike video recording on Android. And most use Final Cut Pro to edit videos. Sometimes iMovie. So macOS is needed which makes it far more seamless syncing an iPhone to a Mac.
