There is a diminishing return going above a certain level, but there is also a big one under a certain one, and 12Mp is the sweet spot.
There is a reason why Apple, Google and Sony who are reputed for their good photography stuff use 12Mp sensors and avoid getting below that.
12Mp have been a golden standard for ages, it allows enough details for retouching the picture in a good way, cropping if necessary, and allow to regular imperfection to be smoothed out when viewed at less than the max resolution (which is almost always the case when not zooming in).
Sub-12Mp Wide, Ultra-Wide or Telephoto sensors are as stupid as 2Mp Macro.
A good 12Mp sensors will often give better result than same size 8Mp sensors as the size difference is negligible unlike what a smartphone sensor vs an APS-C is, but the added resolution, MAINLY considering that there is no continuously variable focal length telephoto, but they all use cropping to have continuous image magnification, will always be the superior option.
A good old IMX586 who crop at 12Mp will get much better results than most, if any 8Mp sensors at equivalent tech.
Only superior tech, like better Bayer, better base CMOS, better analog to digital converter, or better low light capabilities, like the IMX663 who is used in the Xperia 1 Mk3 and Xperia 5 Mk3 Telephotos is optimized for would make a difference.
In the end, the pixel size difference do so little difference that the added resolution do more.
And the front element to sensor size ratio have a much greater impact than sensor/pixel size in the end, making the lens setup playing the most crucial role in all that.

Hopefully this marks the end of the 2MP macro bs we've had to put up with for the past two years. K20 Pro with a real telephoto was the killer to beat and Xiaomi failed with the following releases

Just make it without any punch hole/notch/UDC cancer, with a flat display, an above 12Mp Wide + Ultra-Wide + Telephoto and a 3.5mm Jack already!
Bonus if the FPS is ultrasonic.
But, yeah, why would I expect anything good to happen anyway?

Interesting. A flagship redmi series. Very good choice. Maybe should compete wiht base models of all company flagship series.
