Google Tensor chipset announced with barely any official details

19 October 2021
It's a mobile SoC with a lot of AI and ML stuff built in.

They would also have the option to use the 2 X1 cores only rarely for short bursts which means the SOC will rely in most of the tasks on the 2 A76 cores and small cores. But this means performance of the Snapdragon 765 level. Otherwise I do not see them keeping the temperature under control.

Since its designed and made by Samsung on Exynos lineup, it will be a disaster in battery consumption.

viser, 20 Oct 2021With dual X1s, the Tensor should be noticeably better than ... moreThere's some GB scores already:
      1029 / 2742

      https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/10489746

Quite disappointed tbh, but maaaaaaaybe it will be slightly more efficient than 888 (doubt it will reach 865 efficiency tho)

I actually only saw now that are already available multiple geekbench 5 results for Pixel 6 and 6 pro:
        https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/search?q=Google+Pixel+6+Pro
All of them paint the same picture: ~1030 single, ~2750 multi.
Google might be selling many Pixel 6 and 6 pro only because of 2 factors:
        - relatively reasonable prices (at least in US)
        - the software (no bloat, updates on time, camera processing)
But the actual Tensor SOC is lacking big-time.

If this is true (and it seems valid result) then single core is very close to my predicted 1000, but multi core is much worse, at the level of snapdragon 855+

If Pixel had only 2 X1 cores, than those cores could have probably be clocked much higher than 2.8 GHz, maybe close to 3.2 as Snapdragon 870. And then, indeed, the performance difference would have been much higher in single-core, maybe between 20 to 25% better than 870. But pixel is an octa-core and can only handle 2.8 maximum on x1 cores. f you are just interested in x1 at 2.8 vs a77 at 3.2 in 870, then you can look at the single-core chart from geekbench: 966 for galaxy s21+ and 938 for Oneplus 9R. The difference is less than 5%. If you compare it to Exynos version with x1, the difference is even smaller.

And you cant compare multicore here in soc with 8 cores, we are just talking about X1 vs A77, Tensor has just 2 X1 and 2 A76 and sd 870 has four A77 of course A76 will reduce multicore prowess of X1. To get Fair result you need to disable Those Six Cores in both soc and leave dual core X1 and Dual core A77.

which is absolutely not true. Not in Tensor's 2.8 GHz at Samsung 5 nm.
Tensor id fabricated in Samsung horrendous 5nm process which I would bet it will result in it being on par with 870. Slightly better single-core in Geekbench 5.4.1 (1000 vs 970), slightly worse multi-core (3000 vs 3140).
                  Let's see who is right.

                    In Geekbench 5.4.1:

                    my expectation for Pixel 6:
                    single 1000, multi 3000

Lets see if I'm right about Tensor.

I can't see it being better in that aspect at Samsung's node.

And every rumor has implied that Tensor performance would be in-between 870 and 888 (3100-3500), that's far from "noticeably better".

The G78 20-core GPU slam dunks single android except maybe the 24-core Mate40/P50. And along with its dedicated AI/ML capabilities, the Tensor SoC is in a league of its own.

Bottom line is: here we are talking about the tensor chip inside the Pixels. As I mentioned before, my Snapdragon 870 has in Geekbench 5 the median scores: 972 single and 3142 multi. I would bet that the tensor will be comparable with this one. Slightly better single-core (maybe 5% better), but slightly worst multi-core (maybe 5% worse).
