Weekly poll: do you still want depth and macro cameras on your phones?

07 November 2021
Some will argue that such cameras are just a cheap way to pad out the camera count, others may still find a use in them.

Anonymous, 08 Nov 2021Can we also talk about all the obnoxious punch-hole selfie ... moreYea I remember Meizu 16 series with almost symmetrical top and bottom bezels, while the top one houses front camera and other sensors. It looks great and shows that such tech is possible but too bad it comes from a company which is almost dead. If it's iPhone doing the same thing, no doubt all other manufacturers will race to do the same.

YUKI93, 07 Nov 2021No need for a native macro camera since it can be integrate... moreI agree, in theory, but the macro on my Zenfone 8 is not that great - it can't get anywhere near as close as the Huawei P40 Pro+ I had before it. The AF on the Z8 is just noit that great.

geek-a-contra, 08 Nov 2021bokeh stuff. excepting those trying to get artsy portraits,... moreYep, I hate forced bokeh - I want to take photos that show people and the background they're standing in clearly.

Why is the picture of Samsung A9 (2018) shown for this news?.

Sorry but the polls are really stupid, all the good options are missing.
There are much better alternatives than putting a 5Mp sensor or using the Ultra-Wide for Macro.

For Portrait, we can either have :
*A dedicated, 12Mp or more, Portrait camera, with a limited depth of field, potentially with a higher focal length than the Wide, in fact a 2x magnification would be better.
*Use any of the already 12Mp+ sensor present, typically using the Ultra-Wide to make Wide Portrait, having a matching resolution to allow being more precise to deal with details, such as hairs and other edges who often get messed up by digital Bokeh from 2Mp or 5Mp depth sensors or ToF.
*Use a Telephoto or a Zoom (continuously variable focal length) camera that can get its depth of field low enough to get real background blur.

The same apply for the Macro :
*Dedicated, 12Mp or more, same as the Portrait but with a close minimum focus distance, and also a "superior to Wide" magnification.

And there are solutions to have both at once :
*Combine it with the dedicated Portrait who already is set for short distance, have a high focal length and a short depth of field, which is exactly what you want for a Macro (the Ultra-Wide is literally the worse lens type for a Macro), it only has to be able to focus closer than a lone Portrait lens.
*Combine it with the Telephoto or with a Zoom, with a deep focus control (ability to focus really close and to get a low depth of field).

                Ideally you'd want a phone with :
*Wide + Ultra-Wide + Telephoto who use the UW for Bokeh and the Telephoto for Macro, or even better the Telephoto for both.
*Wide + Ultra-Wide + Telephoto + dedicated Macro and Portrait combined sensor.
*Ultra-Wide + Zoom that can do all the rest.
*Zoom (From Ultra-Wide to Wide) + Zoom (Wide to Telephoto) with the latter having Macro and Portrait capabilities.

But all those 2Mp, 5Mp and Ultra-Wide for Macro non-senses are the worse possibilities.

Depth information can be acquired using 2 cameras, the main and a secondary camera. It's irrelevant what MP the second camera supports.

A dedicated macro camera is genuinely useful sometimes but should at least take clear pictures.

Just wish we went back to normal camera phones, just to cut the cost down on phones,it might make your phone look Premium, but the phone companies know really there not top class cameras they are offering,so why put different types of cameras on phones nowdays,Nokia use to offer the best camera phones with Carl Zeiss on there phones, and they never messed about offering different types,so why not just one Premium camera, the buyer knows they can trust

bokeh stuff. excepting those trying to get artsy portraits, how many of you actually want non-bokeh-ed pictures when traveling and snapping pictures of your family on a interesting and memorable background? i bet the number is hundreds to 1 for the non-bokeh choosers..

FarFan, 08 Nov 2021I still believe that in the future only one superior sensor... moreExactly.

I never understood why manufacturers chose different sensors for the canera anyway.

Having the same sensor would mean a lot less work in tuning since they could use the exact same algorithm and color profile for main zoom and ultra wide.

And it would more similar to an actual camera that does optical zoom.

I still believe that in the future only one superior sensor will be used for all scenarios, and for selfie camera too.

How does it matter? If it's functional, I'll take it.

The macro camera has to have more than 5MP however, otherwise you loose that sharp image you get of ridiculous close ups. Also a large focal range isn't 'better' a closer focus means you can get really detailed shots of extremely fine details.

These 10 cent sensors are just put there to fool customers. They have no real use.

Can we also talk about all the obnoxious punch-hole selfie cams? Like the screen punch holes are annoying and people keep pushing for under-screen camera when an already existing method already exist. Which is having some small bezels on the top and put the camera there.

why need a depth sensor at all? only one cam with software optimization is enough for portraits.google pixel3 and samsung s9 did this in 2018. for better results,3D ToF sensor can be added with extra cost.

Why don't companies just make "cameraphones" and smartphones? I don't care about how many mp I have, extrawide, narrowwide, asswide or whatever. I just want something that makes decent photos. IF I WANTED a smartphone that makes excellent professional photos, I would have bought a 99+cameras phone.
Simple smartphone users don't care about great photos, just decent with 1 camera is enough.
