I remember first seeing it in 2010 or so. I vied for one oh so much.
The games & apps ran so smoothly on iOS compared to Android that it made me want to keep an iPod touch & phone like the author suggests.
I ended up buying a Nexus 4 later on which provided all of that & recommended this separate player for MP3 to a friend.

Who needs a dedicated MP3 player these days? Many people do, there is a market for them and many companies make them, some of them cost more than $1000, having a device for one feature like playing audio is a good thing, no need for it to be connected to the net and eating battery power, some professionals use them for recording studios.

Just bought one for my son for this Christmas. he's 8 so I don't really want him rocking a smartphone yet, the iPod Touch fits in quite well as that go between. It's expensive for the hardware on offer yes, it's Apple after all, but it's capable of doing what it needs to do and I can still see the market for a device like it.

Anonymous, 07 Nov 2021ballmer was right
iphone was a failure til the iphone 4s l... moreOn what possible metric are basing that comment? The iPhone line was a success from the very first generation. There would have been no iPhone 4S had the previous 4 generations been a failure.
Ballmer was wrong, to the point that those comments of his now serve as a text book example of how industry heavyweights can sometimes completely drop the ball.

You can buy a 1st through 4th gen iPod touch for $10-$12 on eBay.
I personally want the Microsoft Zune HD from 2009 if I can choose old mp3 players. That had the nicest UI I've ever seen. The Metro UI for Windows Phone wasn't as nice as on the Zune HD.

Way too expensive. Tons of other simmilar more specced devices were out at that time for much less money.
Since beggining in the garage all that apple ever learned is how to rob its customers by manufacturing in china instead of USA for a lowest possible cost and sell for highest cost on the market.
Only more expensive devices are those which bears sticker handmade and those which are made from real gold and diamond like Caviar brand.
Apart that paying more than 2-3 times the manufacturing costs ispure robbery.

iPods these days can actually do calls etc. Just need a few apps and away you go. Given that wifi calling is something now, I wouldn't be surprised if Sim cards or esims become obsolete

I'm still using my iPod touch gen. 4 because it has 30-pin port that is used on many music centers, in quite a few cars, etc. Even some smart home solutions allows to slide in your iPod to become it a central brain. On the other hand - it is possible to use iPhone 4S for the same purposes and I have that one either. It looks like I bought it yesterday and it feels so much more comfortable than 5C, 6, 6S, 7, 8 or SE (2020). Only 5, 5S and SE wins. 12 mini and 13 mini is worse - too big to use one-handed.

iPod Touch still makes sense for music listeners. Battery life on the iPhone was atrocious and playing music off the iPhone was a good way of running down the battery. So people still used a dedicated music player. And after Apple killed the headphone jack, the iPod Touch was the only way to attach a headphone to an iOS device.

I think both Android and iOS were horrible. But now both are great. Android isn't laggy and insecure anymore. iOS got more features. Pick the one you want. For me even a decent mid range Android phone is great. I'm not a gamer not a cameraman not a heavy user. Just lightweight games web browsing and listening to music. But I don't like really cheap and weak phones. It must have medium power at least.

The Flip, 07 Nov 2021I remember reading Nineteen Eighty-Four and The Catcher In ... moreSnapdragon 855 here and the only reason I have to replace it is because of no update support (and I need that)
But that's smartphone market in a nutshell, my Windows notebook I used for my study from 2010 is rocking Windows 10 and I could technically use it until 14 October 2025 (but I don't because use it mostly for ripping music CDs)
Yet smartphones are not able too, and you can't count custom ROMs for that.
