Wow i thou iphone quit with att contract.... this is really bs, now i changed my mind i wont get the new iphone 3G, i currently have the old iphone and i think bad, you spend so much money anualy, for ringtones, songs or movie? see how sad its

Yeah u have to sign a contract, but if you check on apples site the new iphone comes with a Sim Ejector Tool? one can only think this phone must be Shipping Sim Free, so maybe a sim free option too??

here in UK, O2 plans to offer iPhone 3G on pay as you go so we are expecting that customers will have an option of still having the phone without any contract .... this is looking pretty sweet so far but lets wait till July 11 to see what the real picture will look like

I'm on a GoPhone Plan with my iPhone. Therefore I'm not on a contract. Will I still be able to purchase the iPhone 3G?

This phone on a contract is CHEAPER! (in the UK) Why is everyone saying it's more exspensive? Or am I missing something.....

Australia Italy New Zealand & Portugal will be the first Vodafone markets to offer customers iPhone 3G for purchase on July 11. ---Can't wait until then, hope we can get it on Pre Paid though.

Apple shooting their own foot here by offering the iphone with so many strings attached.we are living in a free world and after paying a hefty sum it should be no different. who does steve jobs realy think he is? the iphone should be available sim free.

I don't think there's anything wrong with AT&T charging an additional $10 per month for 3G. $10 a month is a 50% price increase over 2G browsing. Using Apple's findings, 3G is 2x faster than 2G, so AT&T would be in the right to charge double, but they're not. In the end, 3G's a new network, more expensive, more powerful and consumes more energy - all costs that AT&T has to invest in, which - unsurprisingly - need to be passed on to the consumer.
And - on a sidenote - any conversation about the cost of a black market iPhone is a waste: Apple's launching in 70 countries, meaning people shouldn't need a black market iPhone. And you need a contract to run the phone anyway, so just get one. The cost of a black market iPhone is a moot subject because it shouldn't exist.

i don't see the point with 3G phones because you can only use that with people that ALSO own a 3G phone. and most people don't. so what's the point to pay for the extra 10 bucks for 3G when you can only use it once in a while with 1 or 2 people? waste of money!!. if you really want 3G just for the heck of it. there are sony ericsson and sharp!.. and all these coolass japanese phone that you can get over ebay . for cheaper price AND unlocked!!!. so you don't even have to switch to AT&T (if you're using other carrier) and pay for the activation fee.. and the 18-24 months contract!.

It seems that in Hungary Apple will sign with only one of the GSM providers. I don't want to migrate to that one since with my current provider's contract it's free to talk to my collegues. If I change both I and they have to pay extra charge.
It's not worth. It's not fair: why can't apple aggre with all the three providers?
Is it legal in EU at all?
I would pay even the total price for Apple to get a provider-free iPhone - why is it impossible to give it as an option?

To be honest, I won't understand anyone who will be dissappointing knowing the facts stated in this article.
It's obvious that you'll pay for the phone throughout the whole time being of the contract. The thing is, the price tag compared to the AT&T's or O2's plans is rather attractive and acceptable. I'd rather pay $199 for the iPhone and $35 monthly than relatively more expensive Nokias or HTCs. $199 is nice.
Additionaly, you'll own the phone after the contract expires, so please, do not add the whole $35 x 18 (or 24) to the price tag. We all know it's only a small part of it which goes to the manufacturer.
However, after suming it all up, the price remains the same as the previous generation, or it's even a bit higher. Still, you won't feel the difference by paying some bucks monthly. Nice trick, Apple.

I LOVE the design, the simplicity and cute icons... but performance wise the the Samsung Omnia has a better camera and overall performance (data transfer rate for web etc.)and the SE XPERIA is quite a killer too as it looks.
In Thailand we won't have the iphone (not on the 70 countries) because our telecom providers are too corrupt and too stupid to get a deal onto the road. This is the main point: APPLE IS A SLAVE PHONE, you cannot even "free" it/ unlock it and resell for an OK price. To me this is soooo "NOT APPLE", at least a company that I had associated in the past with being free, innovative and independent.
Anyway, I get either the Samsung or the SE W980 - listening to music and checking e-mails and sending messages - what else do you need a phone for? I sit on a computer all day and won't surf the net when I go out clubbing.
By the time the first hacked "liberated" 3G iphones appear on the grey market here they will be so expensive that one is better off without them.
