Owl, 09 Dec 2021I don't care about selfie. I barely use selfie camera ... moreWhich is why, other than bezels, there were pop-up, flip-up, slider phones and no front camera (second display on the back, or not).

Anonymous, 09 Dec 2021you do know that there's a setting called the smallest... moreScreen size has nothing to do with anything. You still lose content because of the comically thick bar. Take a look at the Poco F2 Pro, it has a normal sized bar as it doesn't have a punch hole
Thick bars only exist to cover the notch or punch hole, but without them there is absolutely no reason to keep it instead of reducing the size to normal

AnonD-909757, 09 Dec 2021Exactly, but not that much people initially were afraid. I... moreSo i wen Mi9T LE - that is still around in the family and working perfectly and even after years dazzled by the popup camera and current owner even after year+ is thinking that it is shame to put cover on such a nice device, I wen to to galaxy s20 FE as it was supposed to be superior manufacturer, better sw, and i wanted to live that QI life. Now I'm pondering if I should look if poco f2 pro is still available somewhere ....

YUKI93, 09 Dec 2021I wonder how the selfie photo quality will look like. Will pretty much be the same as previous udc cameras given how they're still using the same display and glass covers.

I don't care about selfie. I barely use selfie camera to take photos. I do want to watch video without those ugly notch and pinch hole cut-out. Hope this we either go back to 2015 display or this technology become mainstream.

EricDVP, 09 Dec 2021I hate UDC,just weak selfie cameraIt's only weak because they're still not able to make the display in front of the camera completely transparent. That's what display makers are working on now, displays that become transparent on demand. In the meantime, computational photography is used to improve the image, which should become better with time.

Evlo, 08 Dec 2021Yea, I don't understand at all why pop out/up camera d... moreOne reason is because people keep complaining that "it will break". Well of course all electronics will broke eventually. Though I highly doubt the popup will break before the phone's owner decide to switch to a new phone (which maybe one or twice per year these days). The popup cam also result of R&D, so they won't release it as a product without extensive testing.
Another reason why popup cam was not popular MAYBE because the camera function won't be available until the housing is popped out. It's less efficient for face unlocks and can't be used for spying. Personally, I don't use any kind of biometric unlocking, don't take selfies unless necessary e.g for documents etc, and prefer chat/email/call than video call, so the popup cam won't be a hindrance for me at all. Sadly, from a handful of phones with popup cam, only Reno series and Realme X were available in my country. They were too expensive by my standard back then so I couldn't afford them. I think this availability "issue" also make popup cams seem less popular while actually their number is far less than phones with notches or punch hole.

Evlo, 08 Dec 2021Yea, I don't understand at all why pop out/up camera d... moreExactly, but not that much people initially were afraid.
In fact, the vast majority of people who were interested in pop-up simply didn't care or didn't think about it.
But almost instantly, news article writers, and some haters in comments started writing, as an assessment, that it WILL break, it WILL have water/dust issues, it IS fragile, and it is NOT durable.
As if they came from the future or something, turns out, they were totally wrong, in fact, almost all negative claims about the pop-up are wrong.
*Everything will break, that isn't the issue, it is about WHEN it will break, and so far, the pop-up have an excellent track record.
*Water/Dust issues? The funny part in this is, all those who are obsessed with IP rating don't know what IP rating is, it was never meant for devices like smartphones, nor for voluntarily putting stuff underwater, and those people act as if no IP rating meant no water-resistance capabilities, despite IP rating being only a certification and not a build standard, IP rated phones do die regularly when exposed to water, and if you were to compare any smartphone with an IP67 or IP68 rating to any smartphone with a pop-up that was sold in approximately equal numbers, you'll see that there are much more reports of the IP rated phones dead or damaged by liquids than the one with the pop-up, not because they held better, but because IP rating make people think their phone is a submarine.
Funny part, even submarines aren't waterproof by definition.
And dust never caused any issue other than having the pop-up stuck in, which the calibration tool can free with after some tries, and it is again good as new.
*Fragile? Nope, it proved to be tough, it can handle a beating, of course, if the phone itself is fragile, the pop-up can only do so much, but the tech itself won't break that easily.
*Not durable? Well, it is rated for AT LEAST 300,000 actuation, even at 100 actuation a day, it means, calculating (300000/100)/365 = 8,219 178 mean it will last over 8 years, who nowadays keep their phone 8 years?
And it is a minimum, like some ancient mechanical stuffs (hundreds of years clock or steam engine) who are still operating well today, mechanical stuff often goes well above their expected lifespan.
Since the Vivo Nex A and Nex S (two first smartphone with a pop-up camera) were released, over 3 years ago, there isn't more reports of pop-up breaking than what you would expect from any product, mechanical or not, between misuse, defective or having a weak spot or an incident.
*Heavy? I've made a post where I made a calculation of phone volume vs weight and the phones with pop up, mostly the Poco F2 Pro, were at or better than average.
And this despite the Poco F2 Pro having additional features most other doesn't, such as a 3.5mm Jack or a giant graphene cooling chamber.
*Thick? Same story, smartphones with pop-up are around and slimmer than average, only few phones are at 7mm, the average is more around 8.5mm to 9.5mm, many phones with pop-up don't exceed 9mm, and among those who do, they are closed to 9mm than to 10mm, flagships like Samsung Galaxy Ultra often are at 9mm.
Only Apple make consistently super slim phones.
But despite all of this, all of those are based on facts or even pure math, you'll find many who still comment as if pop-up will have issues (as if they forgot they already existed and never had) and other things like that, many express a hatred toward pop-up, and despite this tech being only available on few devices and that anyone who don't want one can easily NOT buy a phone with one, they actively seek to destroy the pop-up, constantly saying it is dead and raging like there is no tomorrow everytime anything remotely close is talked about.
So yeah, the reason is fearmongers who spread myths, it is pure lies, but they do believe in those.
Funny part, privacy has always been something many seriously either consider or just don't know much about, but never you'd find anti-privacy speech before, and anything that could give privacy was welcomed, but then, something awful happened, the pop-up did reveal that many apps and websites were spying on users through the selfie camera, one big hit was against China's official app, which was already asking way too many authorizations to begin with, it would often trigger the pop-up.
And you had BS excuses starting to emerge, such as "it was loading code where there was reference to the camera", while, even camera apps themselves, and any other apps, NEVER EVER triggered the pop-up when not actively using the front camera.
And "strangely", since then, the hatred toward pop-up was stronger than ever...
Social engineering is easier than many think it is, and it worked really well, everytimes they use the SAME arguments, it is always the keywords "moving parts", "waterproof/IP rating", "wear" and such.

Narazumono, 08 Dec 2021Under display camera and yet the notification bar is still ... moreyou do know that there's a setting called the smallest width, right?
Or probably you didn't, but now you do, so stop complaining!
It already has a HUGE 6.7" screen and you are worried about the idk 25 odd pixels it should be shorter by, like wtf?
