However, the reason OEMs pull that move is because miniaturizing tech is expensive. They make smaller margins on actual compact sub 5.8' phones than on 6+' phones.
And as it happens, fans of compact phones EXPECT to pay less for their phone than comparable big-screened phones. Consequently, manufacturers started scrimping on the 'compact' while overloading the large-screened variants with features.
Explains why in the early days of two version phones, both variants were very similar except in size. Whether it was an iPhone or Galaxy. These days, the starting flagship model is akin to an upper mid-range phone.
The Zenfone 8 and ROG 5 are priced similarly now. The former is 5.9'; the latter is 6.78'. The ROG 5 has marginally better specs and I'm betting there are a lot of compact fans who'd think the Zenfone 8 is overpriced.
Likewise with the iPhone Mini. Most compact fans will get the SE 2022 over the 13 Mini when it launches because they expect a small phone to be cheap.

I like the design, It's nice and not too much.
Specs are really good but 120w is unnecessary for me at least.
6,3 inch phone is small, i compared my phone which is 6,5 to S21 which is 6,2 and i can tell the difference, so compared to 6,7 - 6,9 it is smaller.
Overall i like these new 12 series, i wouldn't buy for myself since i had Xiaomi and i can't trust them anymore because of the huge bugs that i experienced.
The most exciting thing for me is the design and nothing else, i can expect same specs next year on plenty flagships sooo that's it 🤷🏻♂️

What majority of consumer wants are medium sized from 6,0 inch to 6,4 inch smartphones which looks good. The look is the seller. U make nice phone, everyone will buy it. What happens afterwards isnt problem of screen or how it looks, but problem of hardware and software.
I read 2 days ago article that Iphone SE2022 will kill android market and half of android fanbase will switch to apple ios iphone SE 2022 because of 350 eur price tag and minimal size.
But consumer base overcome that years ago. All big brands make 6,5 inch, because they sell well. They know, they do research. And when u come to store and see big screen price tag 300 EUR and small screen Iphone 350 eur. Unless you are die hard Iphone fan or hell bent on switching to Iphone, you are going to choose big screen, cute looks phone, regardless if it has good stereo or SD slot or headphone jack. And i dont think ppl will switch to fold or compact sizes. Because content looks better, reads better and edit better on bigger size phone. Thats how it works in world of consumers. Compact size...out of 7 billion ppl, how many ppl would take compact size, especially in same price tag as bigger screen price handsets...0,1%?

The cameras spec sheet looks amazing, especially in the 12 Pro, I only wonder if these phones will still be limited to USB 2.0 speeds like previous Xiaomi models. That's "no bueno" to transfer RAW files and 8K videos, even wireless is much faster than the USB connection in Xiaomi phones.

Phone companies keep increasing sizes then go on to call a slightly smaller version a compact, which is inaccurate because hand sizes don't grow and only a phone of certain size can be called a compact phone, and not just a relatively smaller one. Only the iPhone mini or the S10e at the most can be called compact phones
