A new report corroborates the iPhone 14 Pro will have a 48MP camera

13 January 2022
Apple will use the higher resolution for some hybrid photo-taking and 8K video.

PixelFan, 13 Jan 2022You do realize that a megapixel count isn't necessaril... moreIt counts, 2 are better than 1 they say

Your explanations were not accurate because of your subjectivity just like others critics with no ideas about the technology.

Huawei and others with 40-108mp has proven to the world that more pixels are better and Apple is now acknowledging that fact!!

You like the way iPhone processes the image and that's totally fine. I prefer more natural processing that doesn't smother details with sharpening and noise suppression filters, and that's exactly why I always (have to) shoot in ProRAW with my iPhone 13 Pro whenever I need to use its cameras - ProRAW files still have some processing going on, but at least there's less of it compared to JPEG and Apple didn't mess with colours or tone-mapping on it.

This will help, most likely. More data is always better (most of the time) and apple do have the hardware power to process the amount of data.

Yeah they're doing it to offer 8K video. Can't do that on 12MP.

Should've upgraded long ago though... but then again, It won't be an Apple product if it's not behind the competition.

Personally, the only camera smartphone that I like is the Sony Xperia Pro-I, it does nice natural shots. That being said it's pretty bad for dark environments.
Haven't tried the Leica phone yet so maybe that's better.

To put into perspective, the Samsung JN1 and Samsung GN1 are both 50 MP sensors but JN1 is poop whilst GN1 is used by some of the best camera smartphones on the market.
The sensor size, aperture, pixel size are all relevant.

Also, I am not sure what you mean by "Others use 108MP long time ago."; most tier-1 camera phones are using 50 MP sensors, the only good 108 MP camera phone is the S21 Ultra.
There do exist some not so great to garbage quality phones that use 64 MP and 108 MP sensors but they're a farcry from what any of the tier-1 camera phones can do.

It is a welcome change. Apples photography software processing is on point most of the time. But the photos lack quite a bit of details. I think this move will further solidify its number one status in mobile photography and propel apple into an unassailable lead just like A15 bionic processor.

Great news. Now I'm curious to see if Apple will implement an option to shoot ProRAW in 48MP, as that could blow away most phones' RAW that are output in binned resolution. Of course, we can all ask for an option to shoot ProRAW without having processing baked into the file, too.

Google made the full-res mode completely inaccessible to users on Pixel 6 series, so now (rather ironically) Apple is our only hope in this regard.

Apple needs to do some serious work with the JPEG though - Photos from my iPhone 13 Pro look atrocious most of the time because of its extremely aggressive tone-mapping, sharpening and clarity boost applied to every single one of them. iPhone XS and 11 were doing fine, but they made the post-processing progressively worse since then.

Nothing that any current phone produces is noticeably better than lose photos from 2009 no matter how many pixels they claim to capture.
You can’t judge camera quality on megapixels, more is not always better, and more is often marketing hype anyway because almost all phone cameras combine multiple pixels to capture decent images.
Post processing is the key to decent phone cameras not megapixels and in that regard Apple are pretty good.
