Sony hopes Microsoft acquisition of Activision won't make CoD Xbox-only

20 January 2022
Maybe not Call of Duty Vanguard, but likely any next installment will not come to the PS5.

T-Dizzle, 20 Jan 2022If they make it exclusive, they stand to lose a lot of mone... moreNot necessarily. Exclusive games will draw more people to buy Xbox consoles. Also, Microsoft gets full revenues from their games on the Xbox platform. Microsoft has to pay Sony a fee if they release a PS5 game.

Most logical and realistic scenario would be timed exclusive. Xbox and PC will get 1 year early access to game then they will release on PS or they could bargain and get sequel of God of war and spiderman game for xbox.

If they make it exclusive, they stand to lose a lot of money. Seems like they may make some exclusive variations. For example, CoD for all platforms and Black Ops for Xbox. I'm not a gamer, so others may have some Intel to share.

ae86, 20 Jan 2022That's the obvious. We're talking about only Cod ... moreTbh it will only be the COD that is current and not the next installment of cod X.

so next years COD may end up exclusive to Game Pass.

now notice how MS are labeling the exclusive stuff at the they are not using the MS or Xbox name they are using the Game Pass name, and MS already said they wanted Game Pass on all platforms so may find most of this is a ploy to force sony into accepting game pass on there system.

JustSomeRandomGuy, 20 Jan 2022and no one is stopping this acquisition because..., why??? ... moreNo

            Hehe sony boys are crying.

Also very weird to see Crash not PS mascot anymore, just sayin' :

The same happened with Bethesda and the new elder scrolls/starfield. They're not coming out on ps anymore.. l

Microsoft wants to push game pass and since Sony is not Nintendo and a lot of people who buy the ps do it for third party mostly, they're going to have to switch to xbox

A useful comment I saw in reddit: "That article title is clicky bait as hell (the WSJ article) Sony expects Microsoft to abide by the contracts that Activision had signed prior to the purchase.

Sony spent a lot of money to have Call Of Duty marketing at the beginning of the PS4 generation and if I'm not mistaken the contract was renewed in 2020 with the launch of the new generation. It is quite likely that by contract, Microsoft cannot make the franchise exclusive to Xbox in the near future (2, 3, 4, 5 years?).

The same happened with Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo, which Sony signed timed exclusivity deals before the Zenimax acquisition and Microsoft had to comply"

They don't have make it xbox exclusive if they on right terms but now have more bargaining power fir example to get ps exclusives to xbox by working out deals

It's going to be exclusive and it's meant to take people from ps to Microsoft's ecosystem

JustSomeRandomGuy, 20 Jan 2022and no one is stopping this acquisition because..., why??? ... moreThis is still fine. As a matter of fact even with this acquisition Microsoft will still be behind Sony & Tencent in the gaming publishing industry. Sony Interactive Entertainment still makes more revenue than all of Microsoft's gaming companies combined.

The next acquisition are the one we should worry about since there's no way Microsoft is over with this acquisition thingy.

i hate this exclusives crap, but imo, cod is nowhere near as big as god of war, uncharted, last of us... etc.

i just hope sony doesn't take another 4 years to bring the new god of war to pc, or 5 years if we're talking about uncharted 4, or close to a decade for last of us 1 (just a matter of time before they announce it, most likely after they're done with uncharted and ghost of tsushima)

Theres no way it'll be an exclusive to xbox. Maybe at least for at least the next 4 years. 70% of CoD's physical sale comes from PS and not to mention a lot of it's player are PS owner a lot of which won't easily switch to xbox. They will definitely lose a very large portion of its community.

On the other hand, maybe it's time for sony to revive or make a new game like SOCOM. Maybe they should now consider seriously entering the multiplayer genre now.

Gaming sites though are reporting CoD will probably not become an exclusive at any time soon though then theres this news sites which are not even into gaming are reporting the exact opposite hmmm

Viv, 20 Jan 2022Sony should let god of war and spiderman be available on xboxGod of War is PC game too. PC is basically Microsoft Windows...

Couldn't imagine playing cod In 2022. Take me back to 2007- 2012 cod 4 to black ops 2... Heck I'd even play ghost over that God awful looking warzone
