GooglePlay Protect is next to useless. When I used Android I kept it enabled, but I always used an antivirus, be it Avast, DrWeb Light, BitDefender Free or DrSafety Free (TrendMicro).

In general, if you only use apps from big names like Google's own stuff or Facebook and similar, chances are very low, but if you often find yourself digging through tons of apps from no name developers or even sideloading APK's from anywhere but GooglePlay, chances get much higher.

GSMArena writes: "Google has a myriad of very strict security and virus scans of its own via the Google Play Protect program. It runs both on the files we publish to the store and then once again as you install the app on your device. There is very little chance for malicious code to actually slip by it."

I understand that GSMArena wants to assure its readers that its app is safe. But is is really inaccurate to say that there is "very little chance" malicious code could find its way into Play Store apps, without Google catching it. There have been numerous reports over the years of apps being found in the Play Store, sometimes hundreds of apps, that contain malicious code and have been downloaded by millions of people. It happens on iOS also. I have lost track of how many times I've seen stories like this, being reported in serious technology journalism sites like ArsTechnica. It happens a couple times a year at leat.

At the end of the day, the safest thing for people to do is to download as few apps as possible. GSMArena has a perfectly good website that can be viewed with a web browser. There's not need to use an app for most websites. I'm not saying this because I suspect GSMArean, but because people should get in the habit of only downloading the apps they really need. It's silly for every website out there to also have an app.

I am visiting GSMArena website for almost last 20 years now and using GSMArena App on my Android phone since it’s Beta version. In last 20 years, before buying any phone (from feature phone to smart phone), I had first checked all the details and reviews of the same without fail on GSMArena. I can trust GSMArena safely. It’s the best tech website for all the information I need.
Seriously, I was shocked to read this article. Not sure, but why people use AntiVirus App on their mobile phones? If I am not downloading anything (App or Game) except from Google Play Store, I don’t have to use any AntiVirus App on my mobile phone. Files by Google App is enough for me to clear junk files from my device. Anyway, just ignore them and keep your good work.

Antivirus is not mandatory, unless you already root your phone
