Posted just the right moment when I needed a replacement for my aged and subpar B&O Beoplay E8 1st Gen 2017 (paid a bomb $300) - sound quality was excellent and that was just about it, everything else is just half-thought and poorly implemented at that.
Read this, got reminded how excited I was with 1000XM3 at its launch and this is better than it! Jumped out half an hour ago and got myself a pair of these XM4s and now floored at how good it sounded and the noise cancellation is unreal for such a compact earbud (compared with Beoplay E8, Denon D1100, and Plantronics Voyager Focus UC headset)!
I'm a happy man.

My main concerns are comfort and the controls. For comfort I agree with the article.
For controls, I do not like the lack of customization. You only have 4 presets with 2 available on the right side and 2 on the left. No mixing and matching allowed. This severely limits what controls you can have active.

I personaly love them, i admit the design is not the best but in my ears with the small foam tips they fit perfectly. My long term issue tho is that the tips cant really be cleaned properly and even my most gentle attempts to clean them makes them just start falling appart. Since i didnt find any other tips (silicone or foam) that would fit me good i was forced to contact sony and they sent me a link to manufacturers where i can buy these ,,special,, tips. One piece (not a pair) is almost $5 plus they want around $15 for shipping. And i didnt find them anywhere else. To me thats the most dumb thing on these earbuds. Other than that i love the quality of the sound and they are comfortable in my ear

Horrible set of phones. If you have heard Bose QC buds, this is junk. JUNK.
First, noise cancellation depends on a perfect seal which is rarely achieved by the supplied foam buds.
The app has a hundred tweaks, none of which will help much. Bose is light years ahead, folks.

I'm happy with my WF1000XM4s, I have the WH version as well but wanted these for work/working out. I mostly wanted the noise cancelling which is fantastic even when when using grinders, saws, etc for metal work. I haven't had issues with the foam tips being uncomfortable or falling out but the foam rips apart too easily, they're still holding up with a couple rips for now.
I saw a comment here about treble going negative above 70% volume and they need volume louder than that to hear while running, I turn on anc and can keep volume at 70% while using a grinder on steel so maybe it was the media they used or they are very loud runners? Either way, I don't hear them drop off any worse at higher volume, maybe they do at 100% but someone else can put their ears through that.

Hi, my experience has been fantastic. I just had to use tips of silicone and the sound changed from flat to rich and overall amazing. I have a Xperia 1 II and had no issues at all. The best IE buds for me...

These are my first expensive earbuds that have active noise canceling. I'm not audiophile and don't understand much about all the codex others are talking about here. For me, these ones sound great, at least better than other earbuds I've used before.
I do like base and when listening to for example metal I don't feel like I'm missing much in high frequencies, but then again that might be because the lack of experience.
As for the shape, I found them to be a bit uncomfortable at first and couldn't use them for more than 2-3 hours straight, but then I guess mye ears just adopted to the earbud shape. Now I can have them in my ears until the battery dies without feeling discomfort.
So I could really recommend them, but it might come down to luck actually as to how well they'll be for you. Especially when it comes to comfort.

I completely disagree with what is said about cheaper options. There are plenty 2 - 3 times cheaper TWS buds which sound even better, have the same or better battery life etc. Just look at some Anker or LG wireless earbuds. Another good example - Soundpeats H1.

In my experience, using the hearing testing on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ to set EQ effectively addressed the dull frequency response of the Sony earbuds.

I own this from the day it was realised. And I wouldn't recommend it at all. Reasons: design (ergonomics) it falls off your ears too often sometimes even without prediction; Bluetooth connectivity drops for one of the buds (mostly left) after pause and resume; software is disaster, better be without the app at all or deal with that shi...
Good things: sound quality is nice, connectivity fast, battery is ok, noise cancelling is as good as it can be for earbuds, USB-C finally.
Uncomfortable design is one reason that beats all. Not recommended

These has by far the most inaccurate sound delivery than anything I've listen too.
The audio is completely lifeless. These paired with Xperia 1 III and FLAC @ 24Bit are
almost impossible to listen without hiccups, always intermitent breaks of connection
for a micro second, destroying the listening experience. Sony are just out of the game, period.

THE BIGGEST REASON NOT TO BUY THESE:
The biggest issue with this headset is the fact that the treble goes into negative territory once you get above 70% volume. These are the biggest problems with this headset. How the heck can you listen to music and enjoy it if all the highs get taken away after 70%. Gym lovers, runners anyone who needs moderately high volume levels on their music will hate this thing because it’s almost like having the treble to -10 when listen to music any time the volume is kept over 70%.
Everything else is great. BUT THE AUDIO Quality. Amazing before 70%. Crap after. Get the WI-1000X/X2, it’s the last great headset (even better than WH-1000CM4) that Sony made. I know it’s not completely true wireless, but atleast will have real audio quality unlike this thing after 70% volume.
