It may also be a bad design choice which is tougher to correct. Notice the middle lens is perfectly fine after the first drop.
I still wouldn't deem sapphire to be the ultimate solution. I've had numerous phones with normal glass lenses and none shattered like this.
On second thought, the rim around the outer lens protrudes too much and is too thin. Bending inward can easily shatter the lens, which is what I think happened here.

Now you see why iPhones use sapphire glass on their cameras. The cameras are quite expensive to replace especially on an ultra. The weight doesn't help either.

Just because glass shatters easily, it doesn't mean that it's also the case for other hard materials. You can try dropping metal many times on the floor. It won't shatter.

And the fact you cna't defy laws of physics. You can have soft, shatter resistant display that won't shatter even when droppe from an airplane, but will scratch if you look at it funny. Or you can have synthetic diamond display that will never scratch by anything, but will shatter the moment its dropped on any surface.
