Tell me the significance of knowing silicon other than knowing of semiconductor process i.e. dopping, logic gates, quantum barrier, potential barrier and so on. M1 max pro even can't keep up with old rtx 2060. Even measured with emulator. Which does reduce the application effectiveness and quality by upto 60%. Amd, Intel, Nvidia just light years ahead of Apple. Apple just got TSMC's advance process node. Which Intel 12th gen mobile cpu smacked m1 pro in dust. Lol

M1 max gpu is drawing around 60W for example, an 3060 gpu is drawing around 140-170W
So, yes, as you said it is magically since you cant even believe that is true, but it is
Nvidia, intel and amd are on an 20 years old tech

Goddess Lyrienne, 09 Mar 2022While it sounds amazing and all... Combining 2 processors i... moreIt is impressive. Biggest issue is combating inter-die latencies and bandwidth. They made specific interface for that on M1 and never talked about it till now. Connection between dies is insanely fast here and they both share entire pool of memory. Similar to how AMD does it on Ryzen 5000 series, but with even higher bandwidth and with RAM and VRAM being one and the same and much closer to the CPU/GPU which means lower latencies. Just physical distance of RAM and VRAM away from CPU/GPU is a bad thing, because 10 nanoseconds suddenly becomes 300 nanoseconds. It's still fast, but on scale of computation, it's a massive delay. Regular PC's have RAM far away from CPU, not to mention GPU and VRAM hwich communicate through much slower PCIe to the CPU.

Hamburger, 09 Mar 2022Nope. The Max is drawing 60W, and if boost mode kicks in, ... moreWhat are you talking about?
The apple silicon doesnt have turbo/boost tech
Their core are clocked at 3.2ghz, no higher than that
The M1 max draws 60W...the overall package can draw around 93W
This M1 Ultra we already know it will draw around 110W

While it sounds amazing and all... Combining 2 processors into one is not exactly impressive.
I'll be hones. (Brutally honest if I may.)
My picture of the M1 Ultra was something along the line of Intel core i9-12900k like CPU. (as in. it's still the same size as the CURRENT M1-Ultra.)
So it's actually a 24core CPU. 16 power scrunching beasts (performance cores) and 8 power efficiency cores for the lower power tasks.
80 GPU cores, and 40 Neural cores. the two media centers is a nice addon. so in my opinion it's awesome.
RAM is rather disappointing. 128GB at top? I was expecting at most 256GB... with 1TB/s bandwidth for RAM.
However. I do agree that the Mac Studio is a beast while looking around the size of an Asus PNX series.

TheMan, 09 Mar 2022I really liked the Studio... Until I saw the price. High end computers cost money.

This Studio has similar performance of AMD 3990x cpu and RTX3070 running on DDR5 ram. So if you were to buy or build a computer based on these specs, you're looking at expensive stuffs (beefy quality power supply, case with good ventilation, NVMe PCIe 4 ssd, fans). But I don't think 3990x can run DDR5 ram though, neither does it support PCIe 4 specs.

And I don't deny Apple price would be a little more pricey by packaging Studio into a smaller and prettier box. Hahahaha~

Panku, 09 Mar 2022Keep in mind M1 Ultra is doing that at 60W whole 3090 at 35... moreNope. The Max is drawing 60W, and if boost mode kicks in, it goes to 93W.

The Ultra has 2 x Max fused together. So with boost you're looking at 186W.

My comment is target at the news piece though, where it claimed GPU to be on par with a RTX3090.

But this should be viewed in their respective context. The Ultra GPU having FP32 performance of 21 TFLOPs is very impressive.

You iliteratee boy, by Apple benchmarks? :DDD rtx 3080 is high end dedicated graphical gpu, designed to do very complex rendering tasks, M1 Max is simply low power shitty mobile cpu, which has no dedicated gpu. Gpu simply integrated in a chip, can you explain me how mobile chip which barely generates any power can beat dedicated graphical monster you mr. brain genus? M1 Pro is somewhere in 2060 level, so M1 Ultra will be around 3060 level at best.

Darknoor, 09 Mar 2022I don't give a crap what anyone says, i9 series is the... moreI agree. However, that only applies to professionals.

The i9 is absolutely going to crush the M1 Ultra once the tinkerers unlock it and make it run at ridiculous clock speeds. However, the problem is that I don't know how to overclock. Neither do many of the people I know. This is where the i9-12900K will be better. Naturally, the M1 Ultra will not be overclockable.

This is where I find the M1 Ultra better. You don't have to risk destroying or damaging the CPU to get superior performance.
