Editorial: How Many Redmi Note 11s are too many?

21 March 2022
Many similarly-sounding model names is par for the Xiaomi course, but reusing model names for different devices is just too confusing.

I used to joke about realme launching launching a new phone every week.
I can't make that joke about redmi note 11 though, because before I finish the joke, boom, there's another redmi note 11.

Hey GSM Arena, time to make a stand. Embargo this brand. Stop reviewing Redmi Note 11.

Imagine needing to give proper well tested software/OS upgrades and updates to this many different models with different hardware for 3 to 5 years while not hiking the price up! Unlikely to happen if you ask me. Several of those models will stop receiving support much sooner and it's unlikely any of them will make it to 5 years.

Xiaomi rly took the phrase "one phone per week" a bit serious lmaooooo 💀💀

DocShep, 21 Mar 2022Xiaomi is just horrible....they release a new phone each an... moreI don't think the code base will be that different between all of these phones for it to be a serious problem for a company the size of Xiaomi. The real reason updates are delayed is because manufacturers have the stance that software updates aren't profitable. I've used a lot of different phones and only settled on a few brands.

Personally, I find the plain Android lines to have been the best experience; Nexus, Moto (under Google) and Pixel. All the others have been very disappointing in one way or another. Sony was quick and mostly stock, but very bloated. Xiaomi had long term support, but MIUI is a mess. These are just the ones I really liked. My most recent non Google phone was the Realme Q3 Pro. It's got great performance, but the ROM has so many deal breakers I would never buy a Realme or Color OS derivative again. Xiaomi phones had custom ROMs to make up for this.

It could be worse. They could release Note 11, Note 11 Pro, Note 11A, Note 11A Pro, etc. all the way up to Note 11Z and Note 11Z Pro for a total of 54 different models. Add a separate 5G version to each and you get 108 models. If there is a China specific and global version, then you could in principle have 216 models. Let us be thankful that there are only 13 so far!

Ernie, 21 Mar 2022Pretty much anything without a snapdragon 800 series proces... moreNot really. The 800 series is overpriced and much more than the average consumer needs. Personally I think the 700s and whichever one 600 chip is current is the sweet spot. The 800 series can only really be justified if you are playing a lot of mobile games. What's trash is what some of these companies are puting around the SoC rather than just the 600 / 700 / 800 itself.

The more phones the better. Redmi Note 12 series will have even more models 🥳
Just update the phone comparison tool for next year so we can simply compare 10 models. Problem solved! 😂

The 695 is grossly under represented. The 778 is finally making it into more phones now. The only ones you're guaranteed to see a lot of are the top 800 series, the worst 600 series and whichever 700 the manufacturers finally converge on. All those 730G phones when the 780, 778 and 695 had already been a thing was pretty obnoxious. Don't even get me started on the 660 and 665. There are a lot of trash trends in the smartphone industry including many from Samsung, Google and Apple. Mediatek has like 5 or 6 different 4x A78 + 4x A55 SoCs. Sure this Xiaomi situation looks bad, but it's really just par for the course. Oh yea... Snapdragon 680 vs 675... which is better?

Max.1363, 22 Mar 2022No one could explain it better👌I'll explain it better. GSM arena is asking a wrong question in order to get the answer for their question. The question is, is it working for them, in terms of sales, exposure and market share?!.. And the answer is resounding yes. So that is the reason why they keep going what they've been doing. Samsung used to do a similar thing to achieve market penetration. Xiaomi has taken it to another level quickly, because of the quick collapse of Huawei, and that Huawei share had to be wrestled for quickly or lost to competitors.

No, it is not too many. In my opinion, it is because they have to do that, so the gap between phones and other phones is zero (at least, almost zero) and the brand is always exist.

we should remember that not all versions are coming to all regions. here in the PH we might be getting 4 or 5. might seem like a lot collectively, but xiaomi has always been saturating the mid range segment with a lot of variations of a certain model because they offer different ones per country / region
