The Xiaomi Mi 11 may also be throttling certain apps

28 March 2022
The Snapdragon 888 powered phone is over a year at this point, so it's not clear if it was doing this from the beginning or of this is a recent change.

Ravuh, 29 Mar 2022While i'm not defending throttling of any kind, China ... moreIn what universe? Xiaomi is a prime example of that. They charge absolute premium prices for subpar products. Their phones have been performing the worst using same chipsets as competition, their software support is trash yet they charge Galaxy S prices. It's ridiculous and I don't know who are the people who buy this crap. When Xiaomi's main "Mi" series were 500€ I could look past many issues they had. Now they charge 900€ and beyond for their main product line, yet they haven't actually improved ANY of their typical issues. Between Xiaomi 12 and Galaxy S22 I'd take S22 any time without thinking, even if it's an Exynos model. That should tell you how much I dislike Xiaomi's way of doing business.

If their software support was better and cooling wasn't always trash, I'd actually consider it. But with these prices and all these issues, not even in million years.

Muthu, 29 Mar 2022I think you are ignoring the reputation loss that it causes... moreUm lg bootloop might have been worsened by s810 but was an lg issue.
Sadly Sony was doing even worse then. Motherboard failures left and right on top of self cracking screens that lost touch from the tiniest of hairlines.

Anonymous, 28 Mar 2022Contracts secure chip supplies for years. Also, they do... moreI think you are ignoring the reputation loss that it causes to the OEMs and the long term effects of losing customers to competitors. LG is a classic example. LG G4, Nexus 4X and V10 caused severe reputation damage to LG that they NEVER recovered from it. They LOST all the premium smartphone buyers to Samsung/Apple due to the bootloop issues, caused due to the overheating SD 808/810 SoCs. Once you lose PREMIUM smartphone buyers to competition (in this case Apple), you NEVER recover from it.

There is a reason why Apple is ruling the most profitable PREMIMUM smartphone segment. And their hold on that segment keeps increasing, not reducing because of all these shenanigans pulled out by Android OEMs, looking only at short-term (next month/quarter sales) instead of looking into the long-term effects of such actions.

LG, Sony, HTC and Motorola sold lots of phones with SD 810 in that year. This was the short-term thinking that got them into trouble in the long-term. They (LG, HTC) are already gone or on the verge of closing (Sony, Motorola) completely, exactly due to this short-term thinking. And history repeats, without any Android OEMs learning from the history.

Professional, 28 Mar 2022Underclocking the processor because the os is thinking it&#... moreWhat's the problem? The problem is paying a lot extra for a high-end chip without getting the performance as promised. Why should I spend more money to buy a flagship that performs like a mid-high ranger?

If the cooling is still limited by technology, or is not cost efficient, it doesn't make sense to slap in a chip that the cooling system cannot handle. It would make more sense to the consumer if they put an 870 in there instead of a throttling 888. But hey, anything for profits I guess, f*** the consumers amirite?

Samsung larger manufacturing place for galaxy series is at Vietnam due low labour cost.
But the price in Southeast asia is higher than other China brand phone.

Not to mention about Iphone, the pricing is very premium here compared to China brand.

With the difference price tag, people have their own perception on each brand selection.

Ravuh, 29 Mar 2022While i'm not defending throttling of any kind, China ... moreBruh! They are starting hiking up the prices of their phones specially flagships almost equal to other brands like samsung.

Ravuh, 29 Mar 2022While i'm not defending throttling of any kind, China ... moreChinese flagship phones are priced around the same as other flagships from Samsung and Apple in Europe at least so they should be held to the same standards. The Xiaomi 12 is priced similarly to the Samsung s22 for example. The Xiaomi 11 ultra was priced around the same as the S21 ultra. The Oppo find x5 pro is more expensive than the s22+. Yes, they are way cheaper in China where foreign brands not manufactured in China are heavily taxed and Chinese brands aren't. I think you have a misconception on pricing though. You can argue about which brands you prefer but at least in western markets the launch pricing is extremely similar.

I don't like Apple's iphone products but at least they have justification for their prices since it's their own OS and CPU. Meanwhile, suckers like you pay premium on a smartphone not worth it. Not the fastest phone, not the best camera, not the best bang for buck since 2016.

God knows if there's a phone that needed it, it's going to be the mi 11. That phone had horrendous screen on times and massive heating issues that you'd need to pull all the software tricks in the book to get it to an acceptable level. Got one last year, sold it after a month.

                            [deleted post]Apple: *laughs* First Time?

According to many Chinese users the throttling is done to try to keep the heat under control and reduce the possibility of the motherboards failing which is a well recognised problem in the Xiaomi 11 and Xiaomi 11 pro (not sure about the ultra). Due to the faulty motherboard issue Xiaomi offers free replacements for motherboard failures in China in the 11 series (rather than just replacing the motherboard which is what they would do for other models under warranty) and also offer an extra 6 month warranty. They may have throttled the most popular games to keep the heat under control and thus reduce the risk of these motherboards failing from excessive heat.
