The Xiaomi Mi 11 may also be throttling certain apps

28 March 2022
The Snapdragon 888 powered phone is over a year at this point, so it's not clear if it was doing this from the beginning or of this is a recent change.

Nobody has noticed the lower performance for over a year, but everyone will notice the lower battery consumption and heat generated.

So why is this a big deal? Because fanboys of other brands want to take a shot at this brand.

So... the China brand lovers were all critisising Samsung for throttling apps and guess who comes next? Beloved Xiaomi!
Never stop laughing to China lovers.

Professional, 28 Mar 2022Underclocking the processor because the os is thinking it&#... moreYou buy a phone with a flagship Qualcomm chip for peak industry performance and not to have that performance underclocked and have inferior performance as a result. It's not for OEMs to underclock the chipsets. I buy a Snapdragon 888, I want it to perform. I don't want it overclocked or underclocked. It's like they're trying to protect us from ourselves. If I choose to root the phone and overclock it and mess up the phone or drastically reduce it's shelf life, that's on me. It's like buying a Ferrari with a capped speedometer at 90mph. It's fast but it should go faster and I want to be able to take it to a safe environment and drive at over 150mph if I want to.

The Dimensity 8100 & 9000 however on the surface do seem better chipset choice than those from Qualcomm or Samsung, just saying.

Phone sacrifices performance of many apps, except benchmark. This way you will not notice when you antutu/geekbench score have normal numbers.
            It is not just games.

Samsung is doing to 10.000 apps.

Is this not the reason that android manufacturer huawei places varying degrees of performance control within battery setting, which alters the way in which the phone including the CPU is used.

If the SD888 doesn’t need to be used at full power all the time for all app that aren’t labour intensive then it can save energy.

Anonymous, 28 Mar 2022The difference is not going to be that dramatic. In terms of raw power, that might be the case. But in terms of efficiency (performance per watt), it is expected to be much better. However, it is all speculation at this time, so we need to wait for actual announcement of the SoC, tests done on the phones with that SoC to be sure about it.

I used to disable GOS back in Android 10/11. When I installed Android 12 I was like "My phone has a slighy lower framerate but temp and stability is actually good now". I found out Samsung secretly put GOS back in Android 12. I was actually grateful.

Underclocking the processor because the os is thinking it's a game and you get stable framerates and no throthling in games. Is that a problem?! They are not overclocking in the benchmark,so they're NOT cheating.

On returning the SoCs, may be, I should have worded it better. The OEMs should have refused to buy the new flagships SoCs (SD 888/SD 8G1) after testing them during trial run. And insisted to Qualcomm for bringing out better efficient flagship SoC, instead of buying pathetic SoCs at huge cost.

This is shameful on the part of OEMs. If Qualcomm is not up-to-the mark with their flagship SoCs, then the OEMs should not try to hide it with these shenanigans. They should just return these SoCs to Qualcomm and stop buying those SoCs at that cost and use the previous year flagship SoCs until Qualcomm can get its act together. By doing these shenanigans, Android OEMs are losing the trust of high end customers and may lose them forever to Apple and in-turn long term profitability of sustaining their own business.
