Motorola Frontier leaks with Samsung 200MP sensor

This could be the first smartphone launched with Samsung's 200MP HP1 sensor.

You can see groups of 16 pixels that use same colour filter.
16 are also 4 groups of 4.
Yes, you can read all 16 as 1 or read each group of 4.

HP1 was designed to work this way. It is "quad quadbayer CFA".

Both 12.5 and 50MP are hardware based. While 200MP is software based, since the "bayer mode" is artificial.

      If there are 16 pixels with the same colour filter together, then the effective resolution is only 1/16th of the stated pixel count because of Bayer interpolation, it is impossible to to achieve more resolution than this because information from the neighbouring set of colour filters are required to produce rgb data for each pixel.

      For this same reason, no quad Bayer or Nona Bayer sensor has ever produced more than 1/4 or 1/9 of the sensors pixel count, just look at the many tests by gsmarena for several years now, there is no point in shooting at 48/50/64/108mp mode because there is almost no additional detail, any additional detail is the result of weaker processing and less edge enhancement.

      For example, the Samsung hmx which bins 108 mp to 27mp is the only sensor capable of resolving the blind patterns in gsmarenas test shot, no 50 mp mode is able to do so.

      There is no such thing as Samsung’s “intelligent remosaic algorithm” that can losslessly bin 4x4 or 16x16. I am willing to bet that when the first phone with this sensor comes to market, the 50mp images will just be an upscale of the 12.5mp images and will not resolve the blind patterns on gsmarenas test shot.

          You know how this went with cheap speakers and disposable cameras. The next step is to eliminate the cost of that fake glass lens and the grouped pixels. There will be a big plastic rim saying "500 megapixels" surrounding a cheap sensor du jour. What ever magic formula used to say that a 45 Watt speaker system is "1000 Watts" can be used for the resolution too.

            Meanwhile anamorphic lenses are being developed for smartphones but no OEM has started to try to invest in them...

                3) Apple has been slow on increasing storage size? Iphone 5 had 64GB version in 2012.

                4) photos of phones do not have quality for prints, even lessmif taken by samsung (queen of noise reduction)

                5) because Apple, Google and Samsung put too much sharpening to make photo look better than it is.

                6) apple is going to use quadbayer , similar to op10 pro

                7) no excuse, apple uses same 1/1.65" used by sony and samsung 2021 phones. 80% larger than iphone 12, cam bump is not much different.

                There are sensors with higher resolution (also larger) with more speed than sensors of lower resolution. Apple does not want to pay for.

                  Can't wait for 2030 when Samsung releases the S30 with a 1K main camera and all it takes is 3 photos to fill the storage.

                    Now, don't give us the stupid IP52 rating again.....
                    200MP camera can be fun thing.
                    The sensor size is alright, so with bright day light, and correct software, it can probably produce some good details. Certainly, in low light, it will downsize to create bigger pixels for faster and better image.
                    Some one said 12mp is optimal, so Apple kept using it.
                    No, that's not really the reason Apple is using it.
                    1. Keeping MP low with small senors can allow bigger pixel size. The bigger pixel size, the better it can collect light data, hence faster and better low light performance. Also, in normal photo taking, bigger pixel can really help for faster image taking without blurriness. So cleaner photo.
                    2. Apple had not reached the limitations on the performance and quality of 12MP yet. The computational photography power was able to keep the 12MP game going.
                    3. Bigger MP also mean Bigger files. Iphone had been slow on increase the storage size until recent years, so it was a good idea.
                    4. 12MP was and kind of IS enough for basic consumer. For normal print of photo, to little bigger canvas , the quality of 12MP after computational processing is acceptable by wide range of consumers.
                    5. Due to computational processing, Most of the current or recent daily driver devices can't really show the difference of 12MP and higher MP photo unless you really zoom in for it. And most consumer will just look at it on their phone screen, which won't be able to show difference until zoom. So..... Why bother ?
                    6. Also, if they increase the MP count, they need to give a lot more resources into the software to build upon new MP. To perfecting the software, Apple might need more than just 1 yr work to get it smooth enough.
                    7. Last, all those older sensors are really way too small. One reason is to keep the design of phone smaller or keeping the lens department smaller. Nowadays, lens department design changed, allowing more space, and the sensors for mobile phone has improved and giving bigger sensors. So maybe these 2 yrs, it will make more sense for Apple to move up the MP with big enough sensor for the job without sacrificing quality and focus speed. Look for iPhone 14 or 15, I guess higher MP is coming.

                      Motorola top tier devices seems nice but are a no go for me because the curved display , nowadays most top tier devices tries to limit the curvature to remain a good compromise between form and function but Motorola seems to have hit the handbrake , did a 180 degree and hit the pedal towards the year 2016-7.

                          Megapixels counts it's at least better than high watts giving births to battery life side effects.

                            There will be 16 pixels with same colour filter together.
                            This way software can choose between reading 16 as 1 that results in 12.5MP photos or read 4 by 4 which results in 50MP.
