Ipads are better for dedicated mobile gaming, but if you really need an all-in-one, gaming phones are the way to go. Apparently there is a niche community for Emulation too- having physical triggers or better controller software support can be a benefit here. Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

These phones can not only keep internal Temps WAY below even what some tablets can generate, but can do so under 100% load for over an hour+. Every single phone that isn't a gaming phone (including iPhones and Galaxy S) start throttling after 10-15 mons and get uncomfortably hot, which degrades battery exponentially. These phones even allow pass-thru power which even top-tier flagships don't include. It's not even comparable lol.

The experience is really awesome when you know you have a very capable and well-equipped device. I bought this phone primarily because it has balanced front-facing speakers. Its a joy to watch videos in landscape mode with balanced sounds. Its also a bonus to have a huge battery, smooth screen, multiple Type-C ports, shoulder buttons and free cooler fan. I decided to continue using ROG phones in the future as long as I can afford it. Failing that, I will settle for other gaming phones or some Xiaomi devices with balanced speaker placement (top and bottom grilles).

The consumer for this market are stupid people or people that spend money they don't earn i.e. privileged kids. But it's just a sticker. Compute wise, it's the same machine, maybe with a few gimmicks here and there and a price premium to justify it. If it were a phone like an Xperia Play at least with a full featured controller in it then maybe that denomination would be justified, but no. It's just marketing for the stupid.

blue, 30 Mar 2022Is there really any difference between playing on a gaming ... moreShort answer yes, long answer it's complicated. Like others have said, It's about the cooling and how much heat you can move away from the SoC and into the body of the phone or out into the air. Typically the gaming phones will let you maintain higher performance for much longer periods of time but if you let all the phones run for, lets say 10 hours in one game, then all the devices will end up being close to each other since the heat has saturated everything. the S22+ in your example will maintain 60 fps for maybe 5-10 minutes of gaming but slowly drop more and more as the phone heats up. In the end lets pretend the game drops to a steady 40fps after 30+ minutes. These gaming phones will maintain that 60fps for 30+ minutes but only start dropping to that 40fps after maybe like 1 hour.

Think of it like GPUs and CPUs in a computer. The ones with much larger heatsinks will be able to maintain their turbo boost and higher clock speeds for much longer or in some cases, water cooling, maintain the boost forever. This doesn't only apply to gaming though. 4k video recording can heat up your phone very quickly and things like using GPS navigation or trying to charge your phone while also using it. The better cooling can help in all these situations. Thats not to say gaming phones will take better videos or have better GPS accuracy but they will just dissipate the heat better. This can be especially useful if you like to do like PS3 emulation on your phone. The gaming phones can probably maintain 30fps in the emulator while the S22+ can only do 20fps.

Sometimes these gaming phones can maintain full performance forever because they move the heat away from the SoC fast enough that the SoC will never throttle. The Red Magic phones are a good example because they have a small physical fan moving hot air away from the device.

Now the real question. Do you need this level of sustained performance? For most people no, but there are people out there who need or want this level of performance. This isn't to say gaming phones are better. Just the focus of each phone being in different things. Kinda like comparing a luxury sports car to a car built for the race track?

blue, 30 Mar 2022Is there really any difference between playing on a gaming ... morewell, the S22+ doesn't have additional triggers or buttons during gameplay and this is without additional hardware like a bluetooth controller. right out of the box, you have options, should triggers that can mimick playing with an actual gamepad which I did when playing emulator games like PPSSPP, PS2 games and others. try playing an emulator game with and without shoulder buttons. it'll be a nightmare without it

heck, just try some shooting games or action games that has multiple buttons on screen. additional triggers can significantly change your gameplay experience, ultimately making it far more enjoyable as your are capable of doing gameplay unlike before, unlike from a conventional phone for the better and that's what sets gaming phones apart from other phones. it's not just about the specs, it's the experience

IpsDisplay, 30 Mar 2022Bypass charging??? Bypass charging should be a mandatory... moreI think it's bypass discharging rather than bypass charging. The power supply has enough wattage that it can power the phone by itself even under full load without utilizing the battery.
I miss the old days when phones can work without battery, when connected to power source. I had built a audio system using a phone that gets powered on along with the amp and never had to worry about battery for 2-3 years that I used it. We might be getting again to such situation with ever increasing wattage of chargers.

Quite a disappointment, feels very same as the old one.. and uses 8 Gen 1 which ... gets so hot under heavy load..

emulator not great for mobile especially damon, and some Wii games.. it runs great on $300 PC. It is hard in the mobile processor and GPU. 8 gen 1 is really fast coupled with this UFS+SSD technology if you playing inside play store games.

Black Shark 5 Pro...Always Welcome to India.

You can't go wrong with any gaming phone these days. Personally. As a red magic user. I couldn't wait any longer for another gaming phone. Instead. I have just ordered a few days a K50 Gaming Edition. The specs to price ratio is really something. Even still... I am in awe of my red magic. Did think about another red magic. But thought I would try out another brand of gaming phone. It's gaming phone only and always for me. Could never see myself having any other type of phone. It's a gaming phone only for me. Even as a preferred daily driver. And believe it or not. Even for videos and photos. Hope some of you folks especially in the west consider a gaming phone. Or at least contemplate on the idea. Most of my friends have now got gaming phones or gaming laptops... Even other people are recommending to my friends without me saying much... And wow... Aren't they impressed!
