Samsung's next flagship could come with a MediaTek chip

06 April 2022
The company has previously used MediaTek chipsets for its lower-end smartphones.

It feels overkill that they'd put it in smartphones. X2 / A710 was very disappointing that I will admit.

Samsung 5nm definitely is the culprit for poor efficiency, worse than even 7nm TSMC which is why Qualcomm is switching back to TSMC fabrication despite that it's more expensive. Samsung might do a comeback when they can produce 3nm GAAFET but it's said to have less transistor density than 5nm TSMC FinFET.

Thank TSMC those chipsets are good.

Dimensity 8100 is another story its like sd 865/870 it can sustain perfomance. Even though it doesnt win benchmarks its better in gaming unless someone use gaming phones with sd 8 gen 1.

I keep telling people here all time the real culprit is Cortex X1 and X2. I dont even have hope for sd 8 gen 1+ from TSMC.

Mediatek will still be far better than crapp exynos.

But can it keep up that higher speed over long period of time compared to MTK? Definitely not. If what you mean by better here is more juice, then youre not wrong. But that seems to be the downfall of Qualcomm as they strive to satisfy your needs for higher numbers while MTK is already leading the pack in efficiency.

We need more details to make a proper comment on this.

It's widely known that Samsung's process is inferior than TSMC. So if they ditch Exynos in favour of TSMC Mediatek is makes lot of sense. Although, it's not clear why can't they Snapdragon in all the S-lineup devices if Qualcomm goes back to TSMC. It would be a lot easier for Samsung and also for customers. Less variation is easier, cheaper and more consistent.

However, if they decide to keep the Exynos and ditch Snapdragon for Mediatek, then it wouldn't make since given Qualcomm is expected to move back to TSMC. A TSMC Snapdragon flagship is expected to be better than MTK one due to their resources, experience and expertise.

Lastly, from the article it looks like ONLY the Asian S lineups will get Mediatek, which means now Samsung has three different variants to deal with. This move makes absolutely no sense whatsoever! Aside from huge increase in cost and labour, its a recipe for influx of complaints from customers who will find inconsistent performance between variants. We've already seen performance discrepancies between Qualcomm and Exynos varaint, especially when former is manufactured by TSMC

Would love to see those reviews you are talking about however, always curious to see different sides.

Maybe Samsung is going to pull a Vivo move by giving Mediatek chipset to non-Ultra models.

As of now exynos 2200 doesnt have open Gl drivers at all, if in future Samsung port Amd drives they may reverse the situation.

Because sd 865/778/d1200 use way less power compare to d9000.
