ironically, the pioneers of phone tech are the one that succumbed to lack of profit. those that follow after are the one that profiting from the innovations. i'm still eyeing for lg v50. it's to bad lg close its mobile division. they are ahead of their competitors in terms of innovation.

You can now get this phone refurbed for around $150-200 on Aliexpress. And most of them are virtually brand new.

"There was always on functionality on the full display, something that was introduced with the LG V30, after the V10 and V20 tried using only a thin strip as the always-on portion."

Sorry but I own an lg g6 and it has always on display. I thing LG G5 also had this feature.

          I had one. amazing phone!!

RishiGuru, 09 May 2022The LG G8X is actually a V series phone. It is LG V50S sans... moreAnd I thought inverse, that V50 was a 5G & extra RAM modification of G8x. :D
And ya, we do need just 1 battery change from LG, if not anything more. That's least they can do. Although, with the Wing, they did make a promise that service will be available for the next 5 years and I do hope they cover the G8x too under that. So, it is hopeful for now.

LG was good they just never caught the majority light

I am afraid Sony will follow

The hardware inside the LG flagships is great and has lots of potentials, it's just LG's mediocre software that needs some workarounds and installing 3rd party apps.

For instance, it's really tricky to access the telephoto lens on the V40 using the stock camera app. You need to be in a bright environment in order to use it, otherwise it's gonna use the main lens with digital zooming and cropping. But 3rd party apps like Google Camera (fu24 port) and McPro24fps can directly access the telephoto and other lenses and plus, they capture way better photos and videos than LG's stock camera app. The 4K 60FPS footages of the main lens using McPro24fps app look ASTONISHING!

As for the the audio recording quality, it's simply disappointing with LG's stock audio recorder and camera apps. Then again, install some 3rd party apps like Hi-Res Audio Recorder, ASR or Neutron Audio Recorder (or McPro24fps if you wanna capture videos with high quality audio) and choose the "Unprocessed" audio source and 192kHz sample rate and 32-bit floating point WAV format. You will be AMAZED by how clear and spatial are the recordings!

Even the stock music player app DOESN'T sound the best. You wanna hear what the Quad DAC is really capable of? Install USB Audio Player Pro and enable HiRes audio driver and bitperfect options. There's almost zero background noise while using this player. Just pure sound from the DAC!

And the battery? I really don't have any idea why people are complaining about it. I'm running on Android 10 but I have flashed different ROMs on the V40, even the original 2018 Oreo ROMs to ckeck that maybe there was something wrong with them that actually caused the initial negative reviews. And nope. It performed almost the same across every Oreo, Pie and Q ROM that I have tried, really good for 3300 mAh. Actually comparable to some 4000 mAh phones. If I set the brightness at around %15-%20, which is really enough if you're not using the phone under direct sunlight, it can browse the web or social media for 7-8-9 hours easily. And that's with mobile data. It could be even better with Wi-Fi. You can check out Reddit for battery screenshots.

And the standby drain? It's almost zero! At first, when you buy the phone or flash a ROM or do a factory reset, the battery drain would be really high. But after several days of Android OS doing optimizings and building caches, it would settle. I used the following ADB commands with PC which finished the optimization tasks immediately and completely fixed the standby drain:

adb shell cmd package compile -m everything -f -a
                adb shell cmd package bg-dexopt-job

These tasks run automatically in the background during certain situations, which cause the battery drain, and it could take several days or weeks to complete, but by using the above ADB commands, they would be forcefully performed and finish the job in minutes.

Plc update with battery side I'm using G7 one of the best phone in all round . I'm switching to another brand due to battery backup kindly request you update the particular issue. Also one of the best display sound also includes 3.5 headphones special hifi experience ultimate lg

I love the V40 for pushing the smartphone camera experience forward, but the notch is still not my favourite. Yes, LG can hide the notch well (I'm looking at you, Google Pixel 3 XL), but the V35 retained the still-good-looking V30 while utilising the same Snapdragon 845 chipset as in the V40.

I miss it too? Because with the lg Velvet, that was one great move!!! I wish they could have stepped back on the flagships just so they can build more incredible mid-range smartphones just to win their customers trust again!!!

Samath N8 808 owner, 08 May 2022I'm using the G8X everyday for music and camera and ov... moreThe LG G8X is actually a V series phone. It is LG V50S sans 5G modem. The phone is built like a tank and the Dual Screen case make it very versatile in many use case scenarios.
The phone is a good allrounder and the Meridian tuned QuadDAC makes it very special among audio enthusiasts. Hope our G8Xs last for a decade. We desperately need to cryogenically freeze some new G8X batteries as backup when needed. :)

Kangal, 08 May 2022The whole Android Phone market is unhealthy. Apple's ... moreI echo your sentiments. However it's all about specs and price per dollar war now. And yeah big multi million dollar marketing does make a difference from a business standpoint.

I remember Nokia tried something different under HMD banner by providing excellent built quality with traditional Finnish design and values and then failed miserably. Because they provided a slightly inferior chipset to its direct competitors.

Even today when I hold my $100 Nokia 6.1 in my palm, it's all metal built like a tank exquisite metal body's in-hand feel is unmatched by even $700 phones found today. The craftsmanship of the billeted aluminium body is amazing with two tone colors and golden chamfered edges. I will miss phones like Nokia 6.1 & Nokia 7 Plus. Nokia phones of that time had a character.

Similarly LG phones to had some traditional values for which I love them even today. Good all rounder phones, with same build quality and security of Samsung flagships phone at half the price. And then that amazing QuadDAC.

When it comes to Chinese brands, at least to me BBK is better than Xiaomi. Among BBK I have a soft spot for Vivo. Even their first batch of phone like Vivo X5Max in 2014 showed "HiFi & Camera" in their boot up animation. I have the X5Max even today and it is a bullet proof phone running on archaic Android 4.4. But X5Max had a quality and a purpose.

Today's Chinese phones are like heaps of plastic with good SoCs shoved in them to just crunch out big numbers at AnTuTu benchmarks. The lack character, quality and that "let's start a new journey" feel.

Logic Gates, 08 May 2022I read RishiGuru's comments on X5Max, V20, V40 and was... moreLG's QuadDAC was a masterpiece (DAC + Headphone amplifier) for mobile phones. ESS Sabre ES9218P was its real name. What was even more amazing was the option to be custom tuned by different audio tuning houses like B&O and Meridian audio leading to very different audio sound signatures through headphone jack.

With time, LG slowly was moving away from the audio nirvana standpoint, V60's QuadDAC at least hardware wise was inferior to its predecessor and then with LG Wing and unreleased LG Velvet 2 abolished the headphone jack.

I like LG phones. A lot actually because they are good phones first and then had excellent sonic capabilities. And I am glad you love yours too. I will cherish as long as by LG V30+'s and G8X's last. May the same happen to you.

                              V30 way nicer.

Plus the US admin had destroyed the majority of European companies, and it's going down itself too. The US created this whole dollar store rubbish and everything being underpriced and terrible in quality. They undercut all major European brands, with Chinese manufacturing, where labourers were paid farthings.
Without highly educated Asia immigrants, the US economy would have collapsed long ago.

I had this phone for well over a year. Here's why it was an almost perfect device and why it wasn't... Why's: Fast relatively clean OS, MicroSD, Amazing DAC Headphone jack. Nice photography phone with neutral colors, beautiful screen. The Why Nots: unexciting OS Skin, Low performance video recording that lacked features that didn't make sense such as not being able to switch between lenses when recording, the poor battery life for size, piss poor selfie cameras a good 12mp 1.22um with f2 at 80 fov and a 8mp 95 fov would have been ideal. Crappy Ultrawide camera, this should have been a 12mp 1.4um f1.9 with PDAF. 2x with 1.0um was too noisy, a 3x 8mp 1.55um would have been ideal at the time.

LG's exit from the smartphone business is massive loss for Android phone enthusiasts.

You had real innovation from LG. The first curved phones (G flex, Glfex 2) were made by them. I still have an old Gflex 2 lying somewhere. Brilliant phone, slim, light and a gorgeous display.

LG also made the first dual screen phone with the V20, which is a brilliant phone. In fact, I still have one that I use as a third phone. I LOVE the display and the form factor of the phone. Its sound output is unmatched.

LG lost out due to marketing, nothing else. If they had spent more resources on marketing themselves better and making customers aware of their innovations, they would still be making phones.

Instead, we have bargain basement crap from the likes of Xiaomi and Oppo.

I hope LG comes back to making smartphones in the next couple of years. Big loss.
