Weekly poll: does the Huawei Mate Xs 2 have a future in your pocket?

22 May 2022
This is a second generation outward folder from Huawei, this time with a much improved hinge, build and display.

Anonymous, 23 May 2022Doesn't matter , look at the phone design, it looks ... moreAgain, you're opinion and preference which is your right. But, that doesn't mean everyone must agree.

This was the results of a poll I took on the reddit Fold/Flip forum. I wrote edges because sides implies where you hold a phone. The S22 is a square edged phone with curved sides.

"Would you prefer the frame edges to be Round or Square on the Fold/Flip?"
Fold. 143 voted
59 Curve/Round Edges
44 Square/Sharp Edges
40 Don't Care/Will not affect my decision to buy

Flip. 182 voted.
87 Curve/Round Edges
45 Square/Sharp Edges
50 Don't Care/Will not affect my decision to buy

You're entitled to do a poll yourself. I would welcome it.

So, something to use while i'm not on the move. On the street, job, shopping etc a phone is what i use, something practical to make calls, take some shots, messages and social network. I'd never use a tablet in the shopping while buying things. Imagine the mess, dropping it etc A compact powerful phone is more than enough for that.

huawei has no luxury to be greedy because it is "made in china". besides,it's software is crippled. how on earth they expect selling phones with such high prices? outward folding is suicide for any foldable phone.

huawei in west feels like a dead horse no matter price.

If Huawei sell the 8+256 model available from China, at similar price around £1200 then it would have a place in my pocket, because it also supports stylus, which is not mentioned in the global launch.

Every phone/tablet foldable has better camera specs than the Fold, but all of them do not produce better results. In the comparisons I've seen, the Z produces better results than the Oppo N. I think the Vivo X might have the best camera of them all. I would definitely put it above the Z and N.

What distinguishes these camera are the night time shots and zoom capabilities. The Fold's daytime pic's can compete with any of these cameras including the S22.

If i w... moreTo understand the idea of concept phones, we need to understand the principle behind the concept design. In simple terms, the concept phones are an early phase of a design process, which is meant to explore wide-ranging design ideas, which although plausible, aren’t constrained by technology. Concept designers are sometimes referred to as “visual futurists,” and it’s easy to see why. By letting their imaginations run riot, they give us a taste of what might be in five, ten years of time.

Concept phones like all concept designs are often beautiful and awe-inspiring. Yet they don’t overcome real-world design challenges and rarely if ever, make it to the production line and into people’s hands. Concept phones are only limited by a designer’s imagination, they help them explore every possible angle. Like brainstorming, concept design encourages designers to think outside the box and reduce the risk that they might miss a great idea.

This phone is a design concept

For now, the best foldable camera phone is the Mate X2 and Find N.

But that brings me to the RAM situation. In case you're curious, RAM uses a lot of power. And the more you add, the more power it requires. So, when Apple launched the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, the 50% more RAM than the Pro (6GBs vs 4GBs) had meant that it actually had worse battery life than the normal iPhone 12. That was a bit of a revelation to me, and frankly, I'd want 8GBs instead of 12 or 18. Either It'll never get used, or it will be, and then it'll sip extra battery. Less RAM equals more battery life. Case in point: The Note 20 Ultra could match the S20 Ultra in battery life despite having a MUCH smaller battery, purely for having an adaptive refresh rate panel and less RAM. (Configs were 8/12GBs, versus the S20 Ultra, which had 12/16GBs.) I frequently multitask, such as cheating on Kahoots with the app on top and calculator on the bottom, or just watching a video while scrolling social media. The apps all stay open. And my phone is a baseline P30 Pro with 6GBs of RAM.

The problem area lies if you have something like 4GBs. That's when apps close as soon as you leave because it can't really sustain two apps on Android. Case in point.

The 8GBs of RAM should be the amount ALL phones have, as it strikes a perfect balance. Gaming phones should of course have more due to the resource-intensive games like Genshin Impact that are coming out. But anything more, and it becomes a liability instead of a strength.

That price tho. After seeing the Mate X2 and Mate Xs' prices, I'm almost willing to forgive the Mate Xs 2. But then I look at the 1,500-dollar price tag of the Z fold 3 and I no longer feel sorry.
