Nick Tegrataker, 24 May 2022It's not upscaled, even if it lacks the colour resolut... moreThe full luminance resolution is not there because the colour filter removes 2/3rds of the luminance value for each pixel, so the neighbouring pixels are required for interpolation.
If you don't believe me, Leica make cameras without Bayer filters, they output black and white images, if you took a bayer camera with the same amount of megapixels, by your logic, if you converted the images to black and white, it would have the same resolution as the camera without the bayer filter, but it doesn't because Bayer interpolation is still required since 2/3rds of the luminance information is gone, so you get an inferior black and white image.
The only advantage of the quad Bayer filter or in this case, sixteen to one Bayer filter is that noise is random, and by enjoying multiple pixels for each bayer filter, the noise is averaged across several pixels.

Mobilemaster, 23 May 2022So if the 50 MP can be better than the 12 MP version is tha... moreIt cannot be much better, it can only be very slightly better, the problem is you have a massive file that takes up a tonne of space without the benefit of increased detail.
Refer to other gsmarena reviews where the 12.5mp output images are compared to the 50mp images. They are said to look like upscales. The 50mp images are unable to resolve the blind patterns on the gsmarena test scene whereas the 27mp output of the Samsung hmx 108mp sensor can

Nick Tegrataker, 24 May 2022It's not upscaled, even if it lacks the colour resolut... moreThe luminance resolution is not there because the colour filter has removed 2/3rds of the luminance resolution over all the pixels, to reconstruct the luminance information, the neighbouring pixels or group of pixels are required.
To prove that the luminance information is not there, if you compare the output of a b&w sensor with no Bayer filter such as the Leica cameras to the b&w output to cameras with the same megapixels, but with a bayer filter, it has to demosaiced before converted to b&w.

Lccy, 23 May 2022It's marketing lies, the colour filter over the photos... moreIt's not upscaled, even if it lacks the colour resolution, the (almost full) luminance resolution is still there.
Though 200MP output will be certainly questionable in quality as remosaicing will seriously destroy the details, plus, diffraction.

Mobilemaster, 23 May 2022It can take both 12 MP shots and 50 MP shots too, depends o... moreIt's marketing lies, the colour filter over the photosites is physical and cannot be altered, since Bayer interpolation relies on the values from the neighbouring colour filters, and there are 16 pixels in each colour filter, the true resolution cannot be higher than 200/16=12.5, the 50mp output is an upscale of 12.5mp.

jason, 23 May 2022Can we please move beyond the megapixel race, can we focus ... moreThe Sharp R7 uses the whole sensor if I am not wrong. But too bad it does not have a telephoto camera(many would like at least a 3x zoom).

jason, 23 May 2022Can we please move beyond the megapixel race, can we focus ... moreif you will to pay extra money they can make it
the things with current trend, first we have tech to create high MP sensor with barely increase the cost , 2nd SoC ISP capable to support high MP sensor
and for target resolution 4k, those camera is good enough
current smartphone camera sensor is cheap, its around $60 per-module
so if a phone have 3 camera, main sensor probably like $25~30
beside people that need more image quality will just go buy camera (entry-level)

Can we please move beyond the megapixel race, can we focus on developing a true 1" sensor with a 33mp or higher count? for upto 8k shooting, I say true 1" because the sony xperia pro-I only uses around 60% of the sensor which seems dumb, and offers no real advantage over existing cameras from other manufacturers, is there actually any point in having sensors bigger then say 50mp anyway, novelty aside, the images are not that much better regardless of the resolution, because the phones algorithms edit the images heavily anyway

200mp is only good if it's a quad Bayer sensor that can output 50mp and is paired with a 27/28mm equivalent lens.
Unfortunately this sensor natively outputs 12.5mp photos as 16 pixels share the same colour filter, and the 35mm equivalent focal length is likely to be very wide to accommodate the large sensor.

"...“new benchmark for image experience”.
That depends on how well Motorola's image post-processing algorithm. There's no point giving such a huge Megapixel when I'm seeing lots of oversharpening details and overexposed sunshine in return.

It will land in China for 400 USD but then "magically" cost 950 USD in North American and it will have only a slightly different name. Oh, and it will also still have Moto's terrible camera app. When Xiaomi enters the US market then Moto's share will be cut in half.
