iOS 16 should also improve Apple Health, messages and bring lock screen wallpapers with widget-like functionality.

Here we go again..

They could have added AOD since the iPhone X but they didn't.
I don't think a company as big as Apple can't do it. I just thought they "don't want to". I don't know why. Maybe because it's not that important? It could be.

Is there any reason to buy Android flagship phone over iPhone after this? IPhone just keeps getting better and better.

It is shocking that the fruit logo company is so incompetent as to not have AOD on its fancy-shmancy, exorbitantly priced phones. Then again, why provide additional functionality, when there are ignorant snobs willing to pay more for less?

What you're talking about is called Ambient Display and not AOD. Learn the difference first

SShock, 30 May 2022Yeah, because watch with a blank face totally doesn't ... moreApple is just very very slow at it.
And no, your iPhone XR can't do that. It's ancient by now

SShock, 30 May 2022Just because someone has it first doesn't mean it'... moreStop making excuses for Apple for being late to everything. Admit it that they're slow to adopt new features, because that's a undeniable fact at this point.

Also, you're absolutely wrong about AoD consuming too much battery. Even back in 2016, phones consumed around 2% per hour on AoD, and that number has halved over the years due to large batteries in recent phones.

My only wish is they do away with notch then I can be a fan

SShock, 30 May 2022Just because someone has it first doesn't mean it'... moreLol. I have a Xiaomi 9T Pro. It has an AOD. I do not need to touch to activate that. Also, my battery life is better than any Iphone.

Whackcar, 30 May 2022Androids have had it since at least 2016 (possibly even bef... moreJust because someone has it first doesn't mean it's bets or even good. Bunch of Android phones have horrible AOD which drains tons of power or still requires screen touch to activate it and then goes away after 10 seconds. My iPhone XR can do that without any AOD.

Point of good AOD is that it's actually always on and doesn't drain any noticeable power. I'd prefer the return of programmable notification LED light, but I guess they can do this with AOD now...

They are just a tad late for the notch thinning, Type-C, AOD and a new camera... just a tad.

Anonymous, 30 May 2022Neither phone nor watches need always on display.Yeah, because watch with a blank face totally doesn't look stupid and useless, not to mention ugly. Yeah, watch does need AOD, otherwise it doesn't even serve a purpose of a watch.

I've waited for so long that Apple Watch gained AOD. Then I bought it. Still have Apple Watch 5 and I really like it, especially beautiful and functional AOD. No wrist twisting to activate it, I just have it always on and disabled extra activation on wrist movement. Works great.

                            Ok
                            Curious about the next macOS.

Androids have had it since at least 2016 (possibly even before then, but i can't remember).

And if you count the Moto Display (which i think is much more practical than AoD), then it had been around since a decade. To those who are not familiar with it, the way it works is when you receive a notification, the display fades in & out periodically to alert you & you either pick up the phone to check the notification, or you wave your hand in front of the phone on your desk to check the notification. It's ingenious because it doesn't waste battery life, nor does it cause burn-in issues, and you get to peek at your notifications at your own will. I very much prefer & actually use it compared to AoD which i keep off on all supported phones. There's no point in keeping the display on at all times for no good reason.

As always, to our iPhone readers, do not upgrade until the next update (or patch) is released. And think twice before you do. See if anyone is having issues with the new OS on their device, especially if it is coming close to the end of its lifespan. However, iOS devices that are too far behind on updates lose access to many Apps, as the developers constantly upgrade them due to housekeeping pressures in the ecosystem.

Better late than never HOWEVER I don’t get the delay. Samsung has had AOD since way back and they weren’t using LTPO technology on their panels back in the day. My guess is that Apple were concerned about the hit on battery life would have if AOD were to be used.
