Flashback: a decade of Xiaomi battery and fast charging tech

12 June 2022
Xiaomi is a huge fan of fast charging - at least when it comes to wired charging. Fast wireless solutions may have began to fall out of favor.

If any company advertises N watts charging, then has to make sure N watts can be reached. Instead of advertising N but in the end it is just 70-80% at most.

- Samsung has 45W that has zero difference to their 25W. Same happened to s20 ultra, so it is not "it needs the latest cable and brick".
- Pixel 6 pro does not reach the value advertised, not even for a second
- Vivo iqoo pro same.
- xiaomi as well.

Big batteries are nice and all but not when the phone is so big that it’s unusable with one hand. The graph with battery capacity and thickness makes it look like technological progress made for higher capacities in the same or smaller space. While this may be true to a degree, it does not show how massive phones got, with 6.5 inch displays being the standard and even 6.7 to 6.9 not being uncommon.

fastanddubious, 12 Jun 2022Fast charging with terrible software?..... Tick I dont complain at all with my Mi 11 ultra, Chinese version with stable eu rom. I bought the S22 ultra which i quickly returned bc of bad software, then i tried (bought) one more S22U, same laggy beta cr@p. Flickering display, blurry pictures, a refresh rate which dont mach Sammy promises, semi charge speed... Then i prefer my rock stable mi 11 ultra, with good software. 😎

TBH with a standard 5V/2A charger I am getting pretty much the same power via both wired and wireless charging. Measured with Ampere.

No customer is forced to use the implemented fast charging tech. Well, you pay for it but you can still easily go with an own 10W, 15W, 18W, 20W or 25W PD PPS charger and charge your phone slower when you aren't in a hurry. 30 min from flat to 100% is damn fast and 60-70 min are still good to be honest. Charging from 20-80% can also be done quickly with that lower power. The actually problem rather seems be that most of the people are smartphone addicted and their fingers seem to be merged with it :(

As for the article, it writes about maximum power that the phone can accept, being both 67 W. But it says nothing about power input to the charger, and that certainly is not 67 W. Wireless charging has very high losses.

All fast charging deplets battery quicker,it's not rocket science,if you work 9 10 hrs ext ect a day why would you need fast charging,if it's on charge why your asleep at night WALLLAH,fully charged when you leave out,😱 but them who don't work and play games all day, well that's another story 👈

Anonymous, 12 Jun 2022This is a good feature to degrade battery faster = more pho... moreMKBHD did research on this and found out, it didn't really matter for the lifespan of the phone or around ~3 years of everyday use and charging. Instead what did matter is GSMArena's research that faster charging means smaller batteries as the batteries get split into 2 for parallel charging for speeds above 30W.

Heat kills the battery and phones are smart enough to counter that and sometimes the charger handles the heat not the phone.

Xiaomi have been crazy with their chargers, and always including them in the box. Samsung wishes they were as good with their charging tech!🤣

Charging time is only about power output, nothing else. But if the wireless charger takes 100 W to give 65 W of output power, that's not very efficient. And in reality it can be even more.

This is a good feature to degrade battery faster = more phone sales as most consumers dont like the hassle of having battery replaced.

-First for wireless charging they have 100W wireless charging support in Mi Mix 4, but china had issued a regulatory notice limiting the peak power of wireless charging devices to 50W. That is why allmost all chinese flagships support no more than 50W wireless charging.
-The recent is to give single cell batterries withhigher fast charging solutions, as dual cell batteries used in most high power fast charging phones take up space hence increased thickness and lower capacity.

In this article they measured a 3 minute difference with the same 67W charger: 36 to 39 minutes. That's just 8,3% difference. If you don't use fast charging and you align the coils well then it's a pretty cool feature which can even prolong your phone's battery life when you use it wisely.
