Counterpoint: European smartphone market falls 12% in Q1, the worst first quarter since 2013

16 June 2022
Realme was the only brand in the Top 5 to ship more phones than it did in Q1 last year.

Sort by:

Of that 49 million 1 was for me, after 4,5 years with the same phone. So this is bad news for the phone companies, not so bad news for the environment though. It depends on how you look at it.

At the end of the year the stock of Realme,Xiaomi and other brands will be plenty of them and hopefully 40% off.

        -Still no 200w charging
-Still no 200x hybrid zoom (for the last 3 years we have had EITHER 50mp @5x optical periscope , OR 12mp @ 10x optical periscope.. both mean about the same 100x hybrid zoom. Where are the 50/100mp @10x periscope cameras??).
-Still no under display cameras on TRUE flagships like s22ultra or Xiaomi 12 Ultra. (ZTE AXON 40 Ultra is a upper midrange at best).
You want my hard earned money? Then impress me. Last year I bought a 1300€ flagship. This year NOTHING has impressed me so far.

Vonikhsat S Metra, 16 Jun 2022Phones have become so good there's no need to upgrade ... morePhones since 2014 were good enouh to avoid being replaced within 24 months.
People are greedy and like to show off, nothing more.

Maybe it's time for companies to sell sustainable phones instead of releasing a model every month.

Phones have become so good there's no need to upgrade often.

I still rock my OnePlus 6 and I see zero reasons to buy a new device yet.

What else could we expect, when all the phones (except iphone) that came in last year, came out to be worse that predecessors and they all asked for higher prices!?

Maybe we in Europe do have better standard than most of world, but we are not crazy.

And judging by what Vivo, OnePlus and Xiaomi is doing, next year won't be any better.

Anders, 16 Jun 2022This probably has very little to do with financial concerns... moreYeah redmi note series have gone up like close to 200 euro with just 4 years. Nothing special with any phone right now while all prices are crazy for new models with nothing special on upgrades. Like Poco f3 seris was like up to 350 and now they have F4 series that is like minimum 500 euro while dont have any wow upgrades to make sense for this price to go so much up.

Redmi note use to be budget middle class killer phones that now are on the same level like the rest of the cray mass in price. I would pick Samsung over redmi note series as the same price and wont get much better from redmi

All living cost food and so on have gone up so much that you just dont have money to buy a new phone every 4 months or every year.

Close to a 100 different minerals are sourced from Russia; specifically platinum and potassium (e.g., used for circuitry, capacitors and glass strengthening).

I wouldn't be surprised if we continue to see a trend in manifactuers leveraging existing parts or design specifications come 2023 and beyond.

Russia is also the fourth largest consumer of mobile technology in the world so this places more pressure on manufacturers to redistribute product and efforts to grow emerging markets or double down on established countries.

Stop REMOVING day-to-day usable features (sdcard, 3.5mm headphone, silence slider, etc), stop shipping overheating battery hogs and bring down the price to a sane level, and we the buyers will be back.

I have more features in my 2018 phone and it's "fast enough" for everything I do.

Why would I buy a new phone? More Hz, Mpixels and RAM don't cut it anymore.

Maybe it lacks the 15.385 chinese variant of a phablet/behemoth/brick.

(Western)Europeans simply prefer compact phones over the massive shitload of phablets.

So that means they will start making weaker phones again, so the kids will break them easier. Good job.
