Weekly poll results: most people are fine with 256GB storage on their phones

26 June 2022
Some can squeeze into 128GB or less, but not as many as last year. Also, the importance of the microSD slot is waning.

Every picture, 4K video, spreadsheet, word document, etc gets backed up to the cloud. They all get backed up to three cloud services. The Microsoft One Drive, Google Drive, and Amazon Cloud storage.

IDK what you like about it, my phone works better than the day i bought it (~2 years ago) and part of that package is a 128gb sd card. An sd card is like a hard drive on a pc - a good backup when upgrading pc parts, in this case your phone.

AnonD-546724, 26 Jun 2022Wrong. 45% of people just don't care wether or not ... moreThose who genuinely do not care would vote for the option "I don't need it". These people are safe to ignore for manufacturers.

The option "nice to have, but not vital" is rather broad and would cover many degrees of affinity for card slots (all favorable, though - this is not simply "don't care"). Some of these people may be safe to ignore for manufacturers, but ultimately this option also includes those customers who will abandon your brand if a competitor offers the same package you do plus a card slot.

Since I bought Oppo K3 on Dec 2019, I didn't use microSD. I also no longer use microSD anymore when I bought Poco X3 NFC Feb 2021. On Dec 2020 I use realme 7, it has 128 GB memory. I changed my phone again on Feb 2021 to Poco X3 NFC, I didn't use microSD too, and last, August 2021 I bought realme GT Master 256 GB / 8 GB and use it till now. So, for me, microSD is useless anymore for me.

Soon phone companies will remove the USBC charging port then the power button and then the volume key as well but those can be good things, for water resistance and maybe portless phones are the future

Is micro sd slot in phone still a thing. I'm not use micro sd card on my phone anymore since 2017. Also u guys say why not just put the headphone jack and let user decide to use it or not, for me headphone jack make phone ugly with its old expired circle design.

Sin, 26 Jun 2022I fully agree A flagship smartphone is a premium option ... moreYou'll never get full desktop experience from a phone... interchangeable ram,ROM,GPU,CPU etc ?

Nicer, 26 Jun 2022The problem with sd card now is lack of supporting apps. If... moreBlame Google and their choice for that ... Sadly. They want to get rid of the MicroSD so they can push and push Google Photos and the Cloud in general ...

That's why people doesn't care anymore about MicroSD, they prefer to pay monthly a fee and that's it; more convenient some will say. Not my case; specially when you d'ont have or want to use data (ie for efficiency or saving mode)

And more importantly, What do you do with 256 Gb ? Videos in 4K60fps ? D'ont even start me on the 8K gimmick but 4K60 are heavy files and can be transferred to a MicroSD. Like video from a drone too ... You know, usage and all of a 'flagship' smartphone (S22U 512 in my case, since 1Tb wasn't available and Samsung did throw a Samsung T7 1 Tb upon purchase to 'compensate' the lack of MicroSD)

I don't need it but I think all phones should have it. Some people like me would like even 64GB to reduce price, but then SD card would be good for those who need storage.

A flagship smartphone is a premium option I think the flagship should be designed for power users heavy users and gamers

The flagship smartphone should be aimed at people who want a smartphone but with capabilities of desktop

I think budget smartphones should aim at what the normal person wants why pay so much for basic needs ? Or dumb down the best smartphones on the market for people who would be fine with any reasonable fast phone or be. Just fine using the flagship as a flagship is also good at the basics

I really hope 1tb storage become the minimum for a flagship smartphone soon

It's crazy in 2022 flagship storage options are not 1tb or 2tb instead only how many GB we have big tech companies are really tight with storage options on smartphones

1tb of good SSD storage cost about maybe extra 200 pound so why no option on 1000 pound plus smartphones ?

Well, people have spoken. MicroSD cards are dead. lol

The article's conclusion that interest in expandable storage is waning is incredibly deceptive.

As flagship phones drop the feature, new phone purchasers are faced with having to choose between having, say, the best camera, or a microSD card slot. In the past, it was easy for users to buy flagships with both. But today, the people who prioritize camera over storage will end up with a flagship with no expandable storage. So if you present this poll to these people, of course they will now say "Nice to have" since they just purchased a phone without one.

So the drop in "I won't buy a phone without a microSD slot" doesn't necessarily mean users aren't infuriated that the feature has gone away. In fact, many people who want the best cameras (especially videographers) will naturally want gobs of storage. It's bizarre that the phones that need the most storage don't allow you to expand it. It could actually be that the slot is more important to users than ever.

If Apple decides that removing the selfie camera is a good idea, then over the coming years you'd find that the percentage of people who say a selfie camera is mandatory would slowly drop. Doesn't mean that dropping it was a good idea, and it would not validate the manufacturer's decision to do so.

This slow loss of features is outrageous. For users who want their phones to be a Swiss Army Knife, it's maddening to find blades disappearing from the top-of-the-line product. I don't need my phone to have the best camera, so I bought a $250 phone with a microSD card slot, a headphone jack, an FM radio, and a battery that lasts 2 days easy. I'd buy a flagship today if I could get one that could come close to those features.

Do they know that having the slot doesn't force you to use it? But it's there when you need it, and the same can be said about the jack. Having one doesn't stop you to use your wireless buds, but it's there when you need it. I have a big collection of FLACs and photos and videos, and that would take a long time to download if I change the phone.

The idea that a feature should be removed because most people don't "need" it is counter-intuitive in the discussion of flagship devices, because the whole purpose of flagship phones is to rise above "the average customer's needs".
