The thing is, a lot of manufacturers are removing expandable storage for letting the consumers buy their high base storage phones. For 2022 and the future, especially with the innovations from cameras of the smartphones which uses a lot of storage or file size, us normal consumers/vloggers and people who loves taking pictures or recording a videos must have at least that expandable storage.
Not to mention, a lot of people use micro sd card for keeping their music/video collections, and also old pictures. It can also transfer data easily from phone or laptops. A lot of flagship phones must get the expandability storage back. I wish the government will take action into this.

blue, 26 Jun 2022MicroSD babies, wake up, it's time for you to start a ... moreWell if they switch there phones every half a year then i understand why they want SD card slot but when you use your phone minimum 3 years then you dont need this SD card as it's better to get a phone that has something 256GB storage on it.
You need to have backups for your backups even so there is no point of the SD card for moving data that would probably take more time then doing it trough cable as with the sd card you need to turn off the phone to remove it or set it in. Or just make a restart for your phone after you have taken out the sim and sd card and set it back in so everything work

alcatraz, 26 Jun 202240+45% = 85% of voters look favorably on the microSD slot.
... moreWrong.
45% of people just don't care wether or not their phone has a slot.
It's nice if it does, but they don't care if it doesn't.
15% of people don't need one.
That's 60% total of people who don't care about the SD Slot. And 40% of people who do. That's enough for manufacturers to kill the tray.
MicroSDs were once useful to expend storage, in the era of 16-64GB devices. This era is now long gone and you'll have enough built-in storage in any decent device.
The excuse "But you can swap SD cards from one device to another and gets all your data back" yeah right, so I'm gonna put my SD from my Friday Samsung into my Saturday Sony.
For real, nobody does that.
All your stuff is already backed up in the cloud without you even knowing it.
I've totalled more phones that I can remember, and each time I boot a new one and enter my Google credentials, all my stuff is there. No SD needed whatsoever. Even if the previous device was completely wrecked, I've lost zero data from it.

I didn’t properly read the poll and voted for 128-256, because my phone has 128GB. But I use 80 GB of that. I think it would have been even easier if you wrote like „129-256“ and „65-128“

dbjungle, 26 Jun 2022This "Just over 40% of people can squeeze in 128GB or ... moreI follow the same rule. I have a small adapter (SD to C reader) on my keychain and even my flash drive has a type C on the other side that I can use on-the-go (literally the tech name on our phones) to make extra space or backups when needed.
It felt like a chore at first but I see it is simple now especially with how compact these flashes and readers became. If worst comes the worst, I transfer some to my PC like you said which is not as slow as expected even with USB C 2.

Past certain values, this isn't about what you need anymore. This is where the average consumer stop looking and the enthusiast start to.

Phone companies should either retain the SD card slot or provide enough storage inbuilt. Apple is the worst in that aspect by providing no expandable space, and the memory upgrades are expensive. 64GB is just very tiny for a 2022 phone. My music collection is almost 40GB, plus movies and games add up to another 120 GB not even counting app data and apps themselves then the photos and 4K videos from camera take up further. So by the time I finish with the setup of my new phone, it's storage is already taken up significantly. Thus, SD card is the only option to save internal space. I can live with an absence of SD card slot but only if the inbuilt space is at least 256 GB or more. Anything less is no buy

The thing is, flagship phones aren't made based on the essential needs of most people. Most people don't need screens capable of exceeding 1000 nits, the best phone cameras, or SoC's that are almost PC level. Flagships are supposed to give you the most flexibility, and having support for things like micro SD cards and the 3.5mm jack with a proper amp are definitely a bonus in that regard. They're valuable additions that can be added without taking any significant space in the phone, and unless as end users we are for some reason worried about the reduced profits caused by the insignificant expenses such features add for the companies, there's really no good reason to advocate for the removal of such features.

My thing is, if the manufacturers want to use space as an excuse to omit the microSD card slot, fine, why not go with the Huawei alternative? Nano memory Is a pain but it LITERALLY fixes the problem. Even Lexor sells those cards. They just need to find a way to improve the read/write speeds and have a 512GB option available. It's not like I could get 512GB on the Find X5 Pro or OnePlus 10 pro, or Galaxy S22, or Pixel 6, or...

It's amazing to me how obviously phone makers are trying to get you to pay for storage up front, and remove upgradeability.

Micro SD card slot and headphone jack were important for me as my Sony Z3 which was more expensive than iPhone 6 and Samsung S5 only had 16GB storage space. So I bought SanDisk Ultra 128GB. And I only had one cheap headphones Sony ZX110. Now I have 8 pairs of headphones/earbuds both wired and wireless. I no longer need a headphone jack. And as I use Samsung A52 now it has 256GB storage space. So no micro SD card needed anymore. Although A52 has both micro SD card slot and a headphone jack I don't use them anymore. Your usage may be different. I use wireless with my phone and wired with my laptop.

when most of their higher paying consumers doesn't mind the removal of some features, then it also wouldn't matter to the manufacturers. This is like when apple removed the headphone jack, if you can buy their device then you can probably afford their wireless earbuds, if you can buy their high end device then just buy the more expensive variant with larger storage.

This "Just over 40% of people can squeeze in 128GB or less. That said, 36% need at least 256GB. This means 128GB models are still viable, but you should be looking at a phone with more room if you want to keep it for a long time." doesn't make any sense. The length of time I own my phone doesn't mean I need more storage. I have a simple policy, data doesn't need to stay on my phone forever. I can move old pics, videos, downloads, music, etc to my computer. I can get by on a 64GB phone just fine. I just prefer 128GB and it is often the best value.
