their best ips display was used on xz2 series...
for my personal phone, i upgraded from z1 compact (a 4.3 inch phone with 16:9 ar) to xz2 compact (a 5 inch phone with 18:9 ar) it was not hard to adjust, except that it is quite heavy, esp compared to z1 compact...
for my work phone, i upgraded from z5 premium (a 5.5 inch phone with 16:9 ar and 4k uhd) to 1 ii (a 6.5 inch phone with 21:9 ar and cropped 4k)... it has significantly better in handling, z5 premium is quite wider... i can even use 1 ii one handedly...
though z5 premium is sharper esp when i browse through my photos and even on web browsers despite the phone is said to run at 1080p most of the time... for movies and videos, it depends... there are already 21:9 videos on yt, and some movies i have are in 21:9... likewise, i can watch yt videos having 16:9 ar and have the comment section on the rightmost part, no black bars whatsoever...
1 ii is known to have "dimmer" display... though i am able to use it outdoors, direct sunlight happens occasionaly, so there is that "wanting" that it could be brighter (1iv is, they say) but i hope it will have less of oled burn issues...

Sony phones being overpriced is a 2... morenope, i'm using xperia 5 (1st gen), using since xperia x performance xzc - xz1c - xz2c then jumping into xperia 5 and it has all that the same issue, now i'm glad doesn't had that issue again since using a52s and also has better experience overall.

Sony phones being overpriced is a 2019-2022 development, before that they had competitive pricing. The XZ2/XZ2C were the cheapest SD845 flagships for some time (until the Chinese brands caught up).
Also the Z/XZ series were historically really good in terms of battery life, and the Compacts were real battery champions despite having rather small batteries. Sony's optimization was legendary for a reason. The Z1 Compact had 8-10 hours SOT on a 2300 mAh battery!
Judging by your comment, I'd guess that you've had the Z5/Z5C (though those weren't overpriced for sure). They really got hit hard by the SD810 heat issues and had crappy battery life as a result.

sony phones always been overpriced, and the battery is always meh since decade! also stupid restart after ejecting sdcard/sim that's f* annoying, camera also shit just 1 minutes record started lagging turning off somany features by itself, after that we getting forced closing camera apps because it got heats alot! worst experience buying sony smartphones, i'm glad moving to samsung.

At the end of the day, the display is the part that you use the most from a smartphone, hence having 4K totally makes sense. Whomever is comfortable with FHD on a display larger than 5 inches has to go see an eye doctor.
Also, I absolutely love Sony for being the only brand out there that still has the SD card slot on high-end flagship phones.
No SD card slot = NO BUY! (cough, cough, Samsung)

Regardless of how flawed sony phones are currently they have what, for me, is the best implementation of a 100% screen usability. No underscreen, pop-up or flip camera instead they just have small bezels that hold the camera.

And what exactly have I said that's hypocritical?, I (and many others) don't see the need for ridiculously high resolutions on small displays, that's a statement, but a hypocritical one.
