I guess this Sony sensor is less noisy but the older GN2 was definitely more feature-rich.. Makes sense that Xiaomi didn't send the unit to 12S Ultra this time.

His videos are good quality in general but the narration is often all over the place, like in this video.

After... moreThose patents are only enforceable in the countries with an agreement (i.e., the patent office produces patents valid in most of the west). However, China is one of those countries that is explicitly outside those agreements -- you need to register patents on China separately from the rest of the world, and you can only license things only in China.

                      That's not how it's work.

After you applying for the patent (ex. origin country USA), then you need to apply for the patent in other countries. There's a patent lawyer office that does this, you don't have to register by you're self. But the patent in other countries might not be granted if they think it's a silly patent (not real patent, just a patent to extort money).

                        1. each country have different tax.
                        2. The factory in China, the storage in China, thus lower cost of shipping and handling.
                        3. In other country, they also need to pay profit tax & income tax to local country.

As far as I could make out there are two options in Auto mode. Leica Authentic or Leica Vivid. These actually are the automatic modes. It's just that you have two options for automatic mode. There are other filters you can chose after taking the shot but it seems like you have to choose one of the two Leica options in automatic mode. The authentic one has more contrast and is a bit darker in general but both are quite high in contrast

The reason why phones are sold at much lower prices in China than they are worldwide is that the average price of phones is already low in the Chinese market, and it is impossible to compete with them when they are priced much higher than the rest, unless the company has a great brand status (e.g. Apple).

Anonymous, 08 Jul 2022Plenty of Xiaomi phones are exactly the same between it... moreNo, it's different. If they want to bring a phone worldwide, they have to pay for patent rights, therefore the global version is more expensive than the local version. If it remains only in China, they don't pay for the patents, because the patent usually does not apply in China (it is in fact quite difficult to patent something in China when you are not a chinese company).
Another reason is that many patents are on software, so this is not being counted in the price of the components.

Leica authentic mode is fantastic. I've read in PA about it and I was thrilled. This what I wanted from phone photography in years - less intrusions in post processing!

Shui8, 07 Jul 2022Short note from the Leica boss itself - https://youtu.be/P6... moreI just finished watching MrWhoseTheBoss video. I laughed pretty hard when he complained about the skin tone when shooting in Authentic mode (it's very similar to Huawei's Leica Smooth filter, it's not designed to capture skin tone accurately), the shift in white balance between the main and the ultrawide cameras despite his video showing identical green hue in the leaves on both cameras, and colours changing as he covers the entire freaking frame with his fingers. What was he really trying to illustrate?

I've seen many photos where this phone captures the tones and contrast in a truly beautiful, artistic way, or in a fairly realistic manner that better represents the actual scenes. It's just really hard to take him seriously when he blatantly claims that the colour science "is not good" while not even showing a single example showcasing the difference between the two Leica modes (as well as AI turned on and off).

turned on. He should just left everything in Auto. Leica filters are only useful on certain scene, especially in Street Photography genre. (Playing with light & shadow, contrasty, vibrant colors in certain HSL & Hue adjustment).

The rest of the phone all filters are turned off & just by using Auto.
