Considering Apple cares a lot about video recording, gap between for example 24 and 144mm would be too much. This FL is not much good for portraiture. 90-110mm is much better.

Mobilemaster, 14 Jul 2022There will be phones with retractable lens. I think this wi... moreThe retractable lens prototype showcased by Oppo or Vivo is just to hide the bump.
Focal length is fixed at 50 or 52mm.
Something like Galaxy K Zoom will never show up again. And doing that with larger sensors would make bump thicker than phone itself.
Curved sensors can make modules slimmer, but I doubt this tech will arrive on phones any soon. Mostly because of price.

The specs seem to be quite good. 6x would currently mean 6x26mm = 156mm as iPhones use a 26mm field of view. A 1/3" type sensor has a crop factor of 7.2, so the focal length would be 156/7.2 = 21.66mm. According to Kuo, the f-number is 2.8 and then the effective diameter would be 21.66/2.8 = 7.7mm. For comparison, the Mate 40 Pro+ has 6.5mm, other periscope cameras have approximately 5.5mm or worse. Even if it's 6x24mm = 144mm and a 1/3.6" type sensor, the effective diameter would be still slightly larger than 6.5mm.

Why is it not possible to report without an account since the update of the comments? User TheAlienNextDoor clearly violates multiple rules with his comments that don’t deal with the topic and just troll by offending iPhone users

vrvly, 14 Jul 2022Would be lovely for bird photography. Surely, the more lens... moreWell, capturing a bird with a fixed focus 20x zoom lens could be extremely hard I think. For me a 10x zoom is enough, I have used 20x for things which where like 1 km away. It is not I am against more optical zoom, I am saying it is hard to use it sometimes.

Tt, 14 Jul 2022Not possible in a phone with current tech. You would need a... moreThere will be phones with retractable lens. I think this will be the future. Of course even a phone like that would be thicker than usually. Again, making a phone with 20x fixed optical zoom sounds pointless to me for now( one reason is because images could be shaky, unless you use a tripod every time, because without it would be very hard to make a good 20x shot you know). I think companies should focus at continuous optical zoom just as Sony does, and what could they do(for now, till the tech will be ready) to add an extra like 10x fixed zoom beside the continuous zoom. I might be wrong with the idea, we will see what will 2023, 2024 bring to us(Sony made a big surprise this year).

vrvly, 14 Jul 2022From what I see the 10x looks with the most details on opti... moreBecause it is wrong to compare digital zoom out of 26mm against fixed 78mm for example.
Or 2x digital zoom from 125mm against 250mm.
Digital zoom cuts the photo, upscales back to original resolution then put some more sharpening to increase quality.
This is why photo out of digital zoom is so inferior compared photo taken closer to subject.

Anonymous, 14 Jul 2022This is Apple. Be sure 6 is not from the main camera, but ... moreNo. Apple always measures the optical zoom relative to the wide. Right now their telephoto is 3x at 77mm so 6x at one millimeter higher makes no sense.
