Gurman: Apple MacBook Pros with M2 Pro and Max chips coming this fall

18 July 2022
The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro are in testing and could be ready by Fall.

Anonymous, 19 Jul 2022No? Take a look at 5770. It basically a larger XPS ... moreBut not on the levels of the m1 chip and variants soooooo.....

Gurman is wrong more often than he's right and this doesn't seem plausible. I think M2 iPad Pro is first

Anonymous, 19 Jul 2022which value hahah overpriced same tablet with new name xcd Sorry you can't afford it lmao. I'm loving my M1 Air since it performs well than what Intel previously puts in it and whaddya know, I can actually buy it because I don't diddle around on GSMArena hating on one brand and actually have a job.

          M1 Air is serious value.
Although I generally recommend the 14in MBP, the 16in MBP is good for those need more screen size and battery life. The 13in model isn't that good, same goes for the M1 Pro-base chipset. But chipsets like the M1 Pro-plus is great, the M1 Max (both variants) are good. As you move up chipsets, it does cost more but you do get more RAM, higher bandwidth, and more Storage.

So far there's very little reason to get the M2 chipset models. They cost more, are less efficient, and barely move the performance metrics. So if you already bought an M1 Air, M1PP 14in, or M1X 16in, there's little reason to be upset.

It is the next-generation chipsets that you should be worried about (TSMC 3nm, ARMv9, A17-based) but they won't arrive for another 1.5 years at the earliest.

There's nothing on the Windows side that can compete properly against the M1 options I listed above. All single-core performance are weaker unless you get i7-1270u. On top of that, you don't get the fluidity/snapiness that comes baked into macOS. All the integrated graphics are weaker, unless you manage to get the recently released r7-6800u. So it's still competitive all-round. And even if the Windows laptop wins on CPU and GPU performance, it can only do so at -50% of the battery life. So there's huge compromises. Not to mention other bonuses that comes with the tight-nit ecosystem connecting to your watch, phone, tag, profile, iOS Apps, and the Handoff feature with iPads. Even if you say "i don't care about any of that", well, you still have to remember: The Windows laptops generally have worse trackpads, worse keyboards, worse webcams, worse speakers, worse mic, worse screen, and worse chassis.
...it's currently very difficult to compete against the M1 Macs.

Well, the original M1 Air was pretty decent for it's price IMO. The new M2 breaks that threshold for me, is priced too much. Base specs for M2 vs M1 is USD200 more, and same if you have 8-CPU, 8-GPU and 16GB ram.

If apple has made the M2 just USD80 more expensive than M1, I can whole heartily recommend the new Air. At this current price? Not at all.

Thank you. Saved me US$ 12.200.

Even themselves said iOS vs Android isn't a good comparison since they are built on different kernel and APIs used. Just accept the fact that no one in mobile ARM space could currently catch up to Apple. Everyone literally agrees that A-series chips just dunks on the competition right now if you're not wearing the fanboy shades on. I have a OnePlus 9 Pro right now, and I know I won't be staying on this damn phone for long because of what Oppo is doing to it currently, and incompatible antennas are a pain.

Apple hiring has stopped apparently. It's slowing down substantially. All major tech companies are slowing down big time.

Here... moreI was honestly hoping for ARMv9 on M-series chips this year, but it seems like it didn't happen sadly. Here's hoping again for A16 and/or M2 Pro/Max on ARMv9. Exciting times ahead before the inevitable satisfaction or disappointment - whichever outcome happens these coming months.

The first gen M1 MBPs was truly value for money.

Now people have tasted its performance, the second Gen have much to make up for. Sad that the chip shortage have make this much harder.

I would prefer they release next year, stick to the 2 year cycle.

I wish websites stop using ‘Fall’ and ‘Spring’ etc as if the seasons were universally same across the globe.. Would it be so hard to mention the name of the months or the particular quarter instead? It would make so much more sense when your target audience is global.

Anonymous, 19 Jul 2022XPS does not have power for this task. Precision does. And Precision laptops are not thin and light. The fact that the MBA can do 8K exporting is mighty impressive. More so than the XPS series of laptops and almost on par with Dell Precision line of laptops. I know it’s cool and hip to hate Apple on this website but geeeeeez….
