Kangal, 19 Jul 2022I don't know what I think of the M1 vs M2. Here... moreIphone chips are better just in benchmarks, which scores are not real.

Check the review of 6s. Lower score than 810 and 7420.
Then with update of antutu, its score jumped to over 130.000, while 810 and 7420 were below 70.000.

    I don't know what I think of the M1 vs M2.

Here's some background: Apple has been at the forefront of performance and efficiency in the chip space for a long time. They were innovative with the 2013 Apple-A7 vs the QSD 800, impressive with the A8 vs QSD 805, and competitive with the A9 vs QSD 821. It was mostly a nothing burger between the A10 and QSD 835. These were all decent matchups, especially if you opted for Exynos in that era (5433, 7420, 8890).

But then Apple began pulling ahead, Snapdragon made small strides, and Exynos began to falter. The Android competitors started to lag 2-steps behind the Bionic chips.
The A11 vs QSD 845 was a massacre, whilst A12 vs QSD 855 was somewhat humiliating. Even on the iPad Pro, I gave props to the A12XYZ chips which gave Intel's Core-i (Y/U) chipsets a worry. Shortly after, Apple released the A13-Bionic and they were again 2-generations ahead, there was nothing the QSD 865, QSD 888 and QC 8g1, could do against the A13 let alone the A15. Apple then began to make the Apple M1 based on this new architecture. The A14 was a refresh that focused on efficiency, and the A15 was another refresh that focused even more on efficiency. The efficiency was needed as the devices were now powering thirsty 5G antennas and 120Hz displays. But at this point, we've had three years of the same/similar architecture and it's getting a little long in the tooth.

So I believed the rumours, that Apple was making a new architecture, one that will kickstart a new platform (ARMv9) and this time they will focus on a new level of performance. And that they would release that in 2022 with the A16 chipset, probably built on TSMC 3nm. And to top it off, Apple would be developing it's next generation M-chips alongside it.

But it seems I may have been mistaken; the pandemic, slowing of sales, and chip shortage may have affected Apple more than I expected. So it might be the case that 2022 will be another refresh of the A13 architecture, on the same silicon node (TSMC 5nm/4nm), for both the phones (A16) and the (M2) laptops. That means in Late-2022 and Early-2023, Android can catch-up with the QC 8g1+ and QC 8g2. Same on the Windows/Laptop side with QC 8cx G4 and QC 9c1 (Nuvia cores), not to mention (15W x86) the impressive AMD r7-6800u, or the lackluster Intel 1270p.

We will have to wait patiently for Late-2023 for the next-generation, with the new ARMv9 architecture and new TSMC 3nm node, for the Apple A17, A17X, M3, M3p, and M3x chipsets. Who's excited?

Anonymous, 18 Jul 2022Not from Dell. I dare you to try editing 8K raw footage on XPS 13. It will definitely throttle, even more so when plugged off from the power source.
