Apple A16 predictions: 15% faster CPU, 25-30% faster GPU, new LPDDR5 RAM support

25 July 2022
Apple is expected to use the N4P node from TSMC, which will offer only minor improvements.

George399, 25 Jul 2022Better GPUs doesn't matter if half of the models are l... moreLittle secret about "gaming phones". Since people love to brag about amount of hertz and touch sampling frequancy.

Their screens are mostly the worse of the market.
Most of them have flickering below 240Hz (mainly current generation). ** [ notebookcheck measured less than 96Hz for redmagic 6s pro]
Response time is no better than "non-gaming " flagships.
No even counting that some parts of screen have huge brightness difference near 40 nits.

Obviously people here have no ways to know since gsmarena does not bother saying these stuff. And judges screen quality based on nits and hertz lately, mainly for midranges.

If you make one component more efficient, you lower the power consumption only by a small fraction. And, of course, efficiency is measured by consumption to power, which means that more powerful chipset can under full load take the same energy as the previous one, but it can deal with more demanding tasks.

I have iPhone 8, it’s okay, it’s actually surprisingly good compare to its android rivals from the same era, i’m using it day to day without facing any problems, I don’t see reason to upgrade.

Anonymous, 25 Jul 2022Then when people use, they feel zero difference compared to... moreLol, you ppl really don't understand what efficiency means... Is iPhone SE3 dramatically faster than iPhone 6 or is it as slow as iPhone 6? The efficiency numbers are almost never an absolute value but relative. Its why iPhone SE3 lasts about the same as iPhone 6. But runs several levels faster than iPhone 6. So, if it lasts the same, but is dramatically faster, what does that tell you? It means it's much more efficient.

Why is everyone so obsessed with speed and not put all the efficiency into power efficiency? I don't know. Speed sells I guess, even though chipsets are plenty fast and we could use having them eat less battery.

I wouldn't mind if SD 8+ Gen1 had identical performance as SD 8 Gen1, but they'd put all the effort of better efficiency into lower power consumption. Instead they added MOAR SPEED and in the end it's faster and with tiny tiny bit less power consumption.

This would also solve the issue of 6" and 6.1" phones with flagship chipsets having batteries run at just ~80h in GSMArena tests. If they really went all out on power draw I bet they could be reaching close to 100h...

I could not care less about the chip speed, because aside from those artifical benchmark tests, and side by side comparisons, you will NEVER see the benefit of these new processors, its merely the new bragging rights, oh look we have the fastest chip for opening tiktok, insta, facebook, snapchat, and playing some half baked over rated app/games, I would rather apple put ALL the next chip development resourses into making an actual good camera system, and by good I mean, quality coatings on the glass to remove the hideous lens flare that apple are renowned for having, increasing the sensor size, bringing at least 5X optical zoom, how about improving the macro as well as that was pretty fun but limited, increasing the MP count across all sensors, make the camera really standout rather then dribs and drabs, my Iphone 13 Pro Max is good but it is noticably behind the competition in most aspects, the chips are grossly over rated and over hyped, and there are no serious games or apps that can benefit from it, nor would you want to on such a small screen, now ipads are a different story because you can actually be productive with one of those

💻 today even with 1080p screen can easily last 12h, while old ones could barely survive 3,5h. Battery capacity has not change for most of them.

are people really that impatience or have nothing better to do? why would anyone care about predictions? YAWN!

before someone says, "what are you doing here? or you cared enough." I truly want to know.

As good as Apple silicon is, I do agree that they need to focus on efficiency with small power boosts, as opposed to all-out power. We're past the days of the early-to-mid-2010s where every year brought noticeable improvements in performance. Battery life improvements are much easier to appreciate nowadays. Snapdragon does the same thing, as well as Intel, AMD, etc (performance over efficiency). They should focus on using less power, with the same, maybe slightly higher performance. I'll save my final judgement on the A16 until a device using it is actually released, just wanted to share my perspective on the processor industry as a whole.

Just like seen on android phones.

My favorite part is the magic number 20% more power efficient than previous chip (qualcomm does same).
At this point, SE 3 should last at least 2x more than iphone 6. But this does not happen.
