No, a small and cheap phone can't be made. If you remember the small, old ones, they had very tiny batteries and truly poor endurance. A phone that does not last a day on standby would not sell a piece, not to mention millions.

Phones are boring. Let's face it. People are just fed up with it all. There's no innovation or creativity really. One iphone looks like the next. Form factor of smartphones is limiting and my impression is that a ceiling has been reached and with global economies in the midst of a downturn, people are not keen to splurge over a grand on a phone that looks pretty much like last year's with a slight tweaking of processing and graphics power and minor improvements in camera output. People are holding on to phones for longer because the prices are ridiculously high. These companies are selling for more than 5 times the bill of materials, labour and R&D. People realize they're being mugged off. That's it really. These oems need to get back in the real world.

A good quality phone should be able to last 5+ years. My last two phones I bought have both been used from eBay. Let's put it in terms capitalists will understand. They just aren't competitive anymore lol. No one wants to buy some overpriced crap that isn't markedly improved from the previous versions (actually a lot of people do that, but there's no saving those serial consumers). OnePlus was the one company that gave me hope 5+ years ago. Now they're just as bad as the larger companies if not worse

The Chinese have f....d up this year because they have crippled their flagships and destroyed their midrange segment with higher prices and bad chips.
3 years ago xiaomi had in China redmi note with 3x zoom and mi 10 youth edition with 5x zoom, all under 350$.
            Now even 12 Pro doesn't have 5x.

Price is set according to money invested and some projection of profits.
If cutting price 15% does not give any guarantee sales will be increasing enough to cover the discount.

If you sell 1 million phones for $1000 you have 1 billion revenue.
If you set price $800, than you need to sell 250.000 units more to earn same 1 billion revenue.
To sell 250.000 more units, your brand has to make 250.000 more phones and generates more costs.
In the end, profits will be low.

Everything is too calculated before executed.

Well another reason I think is most people already realized that china's phone are trash

How to create successful phone company:

Step 1: create low quality disco phone
Step 2: change name from "Nothing" Phone brand into "Others" Phone
Step 3: congratulation, now you becomes 2nd successful phone company after Samsung.

I'm finally listening to the Business Wars episode between BlackBerry vs. iPhone. It's a nice revisit to the Aughts and early-2010s. I know a lot of the story like I do between Nintendo vs. Sony.

The most innovating thing Apple brought to the mobile industry isn't really the iPhone or iOS but the App Store. That's what killed off RIM, Palm, Nokia, and Microsoft. Without an app store like Apple's or Google's, your OS would automatically fail. Apps became essential to users.

I don't understand iPhone or Android fans still heckling at each other in 2022? Apple and Google need each other. That's what made the 4th gen of gaming so competitive and awesome between Nintendo vs. Sega and made the 5th gen so progressive.

Without iOS or Android, Apple or Google could price their phones in the $2000 range. There would be no meaningful improvements like what Samsung is doing with their foldables. Embrace competition.

The reason of declining is clear: we're now at the peak of smartphone where no more breakthrough, too many similar phones kept being released years after years (sd 865/870, helio g80-g99), plus pandemic and soaring inflation. Especially the last two kept people to own new phone every 2-3 years, they tend to keep it longer to 4-6 years. Low number of buyers will be normal as people realise that they don't need new phone every years or two. Manufacturers have to gain profit from something else.
